Belizean Poets Society
The Belizean Writers and Poets Society is a literary organization established in 2005 to promote Belizean writing and poetry. Formation The organization was registered in August 2005 as the Belizean Poets Society and formally launched by six individuals in Belize City on September 8, 2005. Belize
Belize (; bzj, Bileez) is a Caribbean and Central American country on the northeastern coast of Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Guatemala to the west and south. It also shares a water boundary with Honduras to the southeast. It has an area of and a population of 441,471 (2022). Its mainland is about long and wide. It is the least populated and least densely populated country in Central America. Its population growth rate of 1.87% per year (2018 estimate) is the second-highest in the region and one of the highest in the Western Hemisphere. Belize City
Belize City is the largest city in Belize and was once the capital of the former British Honduras. According to the 2010 census, Belize City has a population of 57,169 people in 16,162 households. It is at the mouth of the Haulover Creek, which is a distributary of the Belize River. The Belize River empties into the Caribbean Sea from Belize City on the Philip Goldson Highway on the coast of the Caribbean. The city is the country's principal port and its financial and industrial hub. Cruise ships drop anchor outside the port and are tendered by local citizens. The city was almost entirely destroyed in October 1961 when Hurricane Hattie swept ashore. It was the capital of British Honduras (as Belize was then named) until the government was moved to the new capital of Belmopan in 1970. Adele Ramos
Adele Ramos is a Belizean poet, author, journalist and publisher. She is assistant editor of the Amandala, a widely circulated tabloid newspaper, published twice weekly. Biography Both her father and her grandfather, the Garifuna leader Thomas Vincent Ramos, were writers for Belize's major newspapers. Ramos writes short stories, poetry and songs. She was the founding president of the Belizean Poets Society in 2005, since renamed the Belizean Poets and Writers Society. She was reelected president of the society in November 2006. She is also founder of the Belizean Poets Web Group and of Ramos Publishing. In September 2006, Ramos was one of the forces behind the Belizean Poets Society's the first ever Belizean poetry exhibit at the Bliss Institute for the Creative Arts. Amandala
''Amandala'' is a Belizean tabloid newspaper. Published twice weekly, it is Belize's largest newspaper. ''Amandala'' was established in 1969 as the print organ of the now-defunct United Black Association for Development (UBAD), but has been politically independent since the mid-1970s. Its offices are located at 3304 Partridge Street in Belize City. As of 2017, it has published over 3000 issues. The name The name "Amandala" is adapted from the Xhosa/ Zulu word " amandla", which means "power". Editors felt that Belizeans might mispronounce the word, so they added an extra "a" after the "d". ''Amandala'' editors often like to say the word means "power to the people", although the correct term for that is "Amandla, Ngawethu". Edward Broaster
Edward Robert Broaster is a Belizean police officer and writer. Career In 2005, while holding the rank of Assistant Superintendent, Broaster was assigned as Deputy Commander of the Patrol Branch. In September 2006 he was promoted to Superintendent. After the 2008 election, a conflict arose between Broaster and fellow officer Chester Williams with whom he had worked before, for example in 2007 on responding to Belize's first bomb threat against an outgoing flight. Media reporting on the relationship between the two officers added fuel to the fire by pointing out that Williams was an alleged People's United Party supporter who seemed to have lost favour due to Minister of Home Affairs Ralph Fonseca's fall from power, while Broaster was on the United Democratic Party's side and thus alleged to be the new administration's favourite. September Celebrations
The September Celebrations are a pair of holidays in Belize only eleven days apart. They are: * Battle of St. George's Caye Day (alternatively, National Day), 10 September, celebrated since 1898; *Independence Day, 21 September, celebrated since 1981. A calendar of activities has traditionally been held every year centred on both events. Annual traditions such as the Queen of the Bay pageant, concerts and talent shows, the Citizens Parade on the Tenth and Uniform Parade on the 21st and Carnival (traditionally held on the middle Saturday but has been held on other days) add to the Celebrations. In 2007, September Celebrations began on 31 August and concluded on 22 September with a postponed Carnival (it had been postponed for two weeks due to Hurricanes Dean and Felix). Belizean Literature
The culture of Belize is a mix of influences and people from Kriol, Maya, East Indian, Garinagu (also known as Garifuna), Mestizo (a mixture of Spanish and Native Americans), Mennonites who are of German descent, with many other cultures from Chinese to Lebanese. It is a unique blend that emerged through the country's long and occasionally violent history. In Belizean folklore, we find the legends of La Llorona, Cadejo, the Tata Duende, and X'tabai. The idea of the mystical healing and Obeah is prominent in Belizean legend, and there is still talk of evil shaman practices like putting "Obeah" on certain houses. This is known to be done by burying a bottle with the 'evil' under a tree close by the house. Marriage and family Belizean marriages are commonly celebrated with church weddings and colorful receptions featuring food, drink and dance.
