Belinda Biafore
Belinda Biafore (born January 17, 1957) was as the chairwoman of the West Virginia Democratic Party for February 2015-June 2022. According to her colleagues, Biafore has been handing out Democratic campaign pamphlets since the third grade. She attended Fairmont Senior High School and Fairmont State College. She served as chairwoman of the Marion County Democratic Party, and was vice chair of the West Virginia Democratic Party from 2005 to 2015. After party chairman Larry Puccio stepped down to chair Joe Manchin's Country Roads PAC, Biafore was selected as chair by the party's executive committee. She was reelected by the state convention in 2016, despite a challenge by vice chair Chris Regan. She was also reelected in 2020. The West Virginia Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of West Virginia. History The state of West Virginia granted itself statehood after its people, through a state constitutional convention, became a free state and broke away from the slave holding state of Virginia in 1861 during the first year of the Civil War. Article IV of the U.S. Constitution requires consent of the newly formed state, the original state, and Congress. Since the Virginian government was ruled illegitimate as it was a member of the Confederate States of America, no approval was required and after Congressional consent, self-statehood was gained and political party formation prospered. The ''Charleston Gazette-Mail'' is the only daily morning newspaper in Charleston, West Virginia. It is the product of a July 2015 merger between ''The Charleston Gazette'' and the '' Charleston Daily Mail''. The paper is one of nine owned by HD Media. Superdelegate
In American politics, a superdelegate is an unpledged delegate to the Democratic National Convention who is seated automatically and chooses for themselves for whom they vote. These Democratic Party superdelegates (who make up slightly under 15% of all convention delegates) include party leaders and elected officials (PLEOs). Democratic superdelegates are free to support any candidate for the presidential nomination. This contrasts with pledged delegates who are selected based on the party primaries and caucuses in each U.S. state, in which voters choose among candidates for the party's presidential nomination. On August 25, 2018, the Democratic National Committee agreed to reduce the influence of superdelegates by generally preventing them from voting on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention, allowing their votes only in a contested nomination. Joe Manchin
Joseph Manchin III (born August 24, 1947) is an American politician and businessman serving as the senior United States senator from West Virginia, a seat he has held since 2010. A member of the Democratic Party, Manchin was the 34th governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and the 27th secretary of state of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005. After becoming a senator in 2010, he became the state's senior U.S. senator when Jay Rockefeller retired in 2015. Before entering politics, Manchin helped found and was the president of Enersystems, a coal brokerage company his family owns and operates. Manchin won the 2004 West Virginia gubernatorial election by a large margin and was reelected by an even larger margin in 2008.
