Belgian Open (tennis)
The Belgian Open or Belgian International was a tennis tournament founded in 1899 as a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament. The tournament was staged as a joint event until 1971 when the women's event was discontinued, the men's event continued under the brand name Belgian Open Championships, then later was known as the Belgian International Championships until 1981 when it was discontinued. In 1987 the tournament was revived as a women's only event also known as the Benelux Open (for sponsorship reasons) that ran annually to 2001 when it was abolished. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the Sports governing body, governing body of world tennis, wheelchair tennis, and beach tennis. Mexx
Mexx is a fashion brand of HVEG Fashion Group that was created in the Netherlands by Rattan Chadha in 1986 by merging his brands Moustache (for men) and Emmanuelle (for women). The brand's name is a combination of two of Chadha's previous business ventures, a men's line "Moustache" and a women's line "Emanuelle" It takes the first letter of both brands and adds two kisses to it: Mexx. M (oustache) + E (manuelle) + XX (two kisses) = MEXX. The advertising campaign "Everything should be XX" from 1986 caught on attention and Mexx became popular. Mexx has grown into an international brand in women's, men's and children's clothing with stores in more than 50 countries. With a production of 40 million pieces, Mexx was one of the top thirty largest brands in Europe in 2010. Arthur Diemer Kool
Arthur Diemer Kool (30 January 1896 – 3 October 1959) was a Dutch tennis player. He won the singles title at the Dutch Tennis Championships in 1912 aged 16 and won the title again in 1915, 1916 and 1917. With Gerard Scheurleer he became doubles champion in 1914, 1915 and with Christiaan van Lennep in 1916 and 1923. Diemer Kool won the national mixed doubles title in 1914, 1916 and 1917. He played in 15 ties for the Dutch Davis Cup team between 1920 and 1933 and compiled a 25–13 win-loss record. Diemer Kool participated in the 1921 Wimbledon Championships where he reached the third round in the singles event in which he lost to André Gobert in four sets. Gerard Scheurleer
Gerard Scheurleer (29 May 1886 – 11 October 1948), was a Dutch field hockey and tennis player who represented the Netherlands at the Intercalated Games. At the 1906 Intercalated Games he won his first three rounds of the singles event against Greek players to reach the semifinal which he lost to eventual gold medal winner Max Decugis. With compatriot Karel Beukema he also competed in the doubles event where they lost their first match, in the quarterfinal, against the French team and eventual gold medal winners Max Decugis and Maurice Germot. Scheurleer competed in three Wimbledon Championships between 1919 and 1926. After wins against A. Wallis Myers and Nicolae Mișu he reached the third round of the singles event at the 1920 Wimbledon Championships which he lost to Frank Jarvis in straight sets. Jean Washer
Jean Marie Octave Constant Washer (; 22 August 1894 – 23 March 1972) was a Belgian tennis player successful in the 1920s. He was the father of Philippe Washer. Tennis career Washer reached the final of the World Hard Court championships (the precursor to the French championships) in 1921, beating Jean Borotra in the quarter finals. He lost the final in straight sets to Bill Tilden. The correspondent from ''Le Sport universel illustré'' summed up the Belgian by saying "Washer is one of the most conscientious players in existence. Solid, robust, he reminds me completely of one of the best forwards in the world of rugby". The article went on to describe the final and said Washer had a "very good forehand" and made a "better showing than the result seems to indicate, because he obliged the great Tilden to work hard". Anthony Frederick Wilding (31 October 1883 – 9 May 1915), also known as Tony Wilding, was a New Zealand world number 1 ranked male tennis players, world No. 1 tennis player and soldier who was killed in action during World War I. Paul De Borman
Paul de Borman (; 1 December 1879 – 21 April 1948) was a Belgian tennis player who was active during the early part of the 20th century. He is regarded as a pioneer of Belgian tennis. From 1946 to 1947 he was president of the International Tennis Federation. De Borman was cofounder of the Royal Léopold Club in 1898. Between 1904 and 1919 he played in ten ties for the Belgian Davis Cup team, then called International Lawn Tennis Challenge. His best Davis Cup performance came in 1904 when, together with William le Maire de Warzée, they reached the final of the World Group in which they lost to the British Isles. Herbert Roper Barrett, KC (24 November 1873 – 27 July 1943) was a tennis player from Great Britain. Biography Barrett was born on 24 November 1873 in Upton, Essex. At the London Olympics in 1908 Barrett won a gold medal in the men's indoor doubles event with Arthur Gore. They also won the doubles in Wimbledon in 1909. In 1912 and 1913 he won the Wimbledon doubles title with Charles Dixon. He played his first Wimbledon singles' competition in 1898, reaching the second round in which he lost to eventual finalist Laurence Doherty. In 1908 he reached the All comers final, beating Anthony Wilding and Major Ritchie before losing in five sets to Arthur Gore. Els Callens
Els Callens (born 20 August 1970) is a former professional female tennis player from Belgium. Callens became professional in January 1990. Her biggest achievement came in 2000 during the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney where she won the bronze medal in women's doubles, partnering Dominique Van Roost-Monami. She retired on 26 October 2005, after losing her second-round match at the Gaz de France Stars tournament in Hasselt. She started a comeback, and finally retired from professional tennis in 2011.
