Belfast Giants
The Belfast Giants (known officially as the Stena Line Belfast Giants due to sponsorship) are a professional ice hockey team based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. They compete in the UK's Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) and are the current champions for the 6th time in their history. They play their home games at the SSE Arena (formerly known as the Odyssey Arena). Elite Ice Hockey League
The Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), sometimes referred to as the British Elite League or, for sponsorship reasons, the Viaplay Elite League, is an ice hockey league in the United Kingdom. Formed in 2003 following the demise of the Ice Hockey Superleague, it is the highest level of ice hockey competition in the United Kingdom. The league operate three competitions for members; the play-offs determine the national champion for the season, following a regular season league competition for which separate champions are also crowned, and which selects and seeds the teams in the play-offs. Finally, a stand-alone cup competition, the Challenge Cup, is also held annually, beginning with the group stages followed by a knock-out format. Shane Johnson (ice Hockey)
Shane Johnson (born January 1, 1974 in Brandon, Manitoba) is a retired British ice hockey defenceman of Canadian origin. Playing career Johnson spent four seasons at Boston University before spending a year with the Canadian National Ice Hockey Team. In 1998, Johnson moved to the United Kingdom's British Ice Hockey Superleague with the London Knights. He then moved to the Bracknell Bees and won the Superleague title with the team. Johnson then moved to the Belfast Giants in 2000 and became a huge fan favourite during a six-year spell which saw him win another Superleague title in 2002, the playoff cup in 2003 and the Elite League title in 2006 as well as becoming an all-star. In 2006, Johnson moved to the Sheffield Steelers, but midway through the season, Johnson signed with the Slough Jets. Jason Ruff
Jason C. Ruff (born January 27, 1970) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Career Ruff was the third pick, 96th overall selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. The following year, he was part of the WHL East First All-Star Team. Ruff is a graduate of the Western Hockey League, where he spent four seasons as a member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes before joining the NHL with St. Louis Blues and later Tampa Bay Lightning. Ruff has played for the Belfast Giants since the 2001–2002 season, with one year sojourns to Ingolstadt in the DEL (2002–2003) and Kansas City Outlaws (2004–2005). Terran Sandwith
Terran Sandwith (born April 17, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played eight games in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Edmonton Oilers during the 1997–98 season. Bio Sandwith was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He started his junior career with the Tri-City Americans in the WHL, steadily improving his point totals in three seasons with the team. For the 1991–92 season, Sandwith split time with the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Saskatoon Blades. He totalled 27 points to go along with 198 penalty minutes. He was selected in the second round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, 42nd overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers. Sheffield Steelers
The Sheffield Steelers are a professional ice hockey team located in Sheffield, England. They were formed in 1991 (see 1991 in sport) and play their home games at the Utilita Arena. They are currently a member of the Elite Ice Hockey League. The club's main (title) sponsor is Sheffield Window Centre. The Ayr Scottish Eagles were a professional Scottish ice hockey club, from Ayr, Scotland. They were formed in 1996 and played their home games at the Centrum Arena. Nottingham Panthers
The Nottingham Panthers are a British professional ice hockey club based in Nottingham, England. They are members of the Elite Ice Hockey League. Their main team sponsor is the Nottingham Building Society. The Nottingham Panthers have won four league titles (two English National League titles, one British National League title and one Elite Ice Hockey League title), five Championships, six Autumn Cups and eight Challenge Cups during their history. 2000–01 Belfast Giants Season
The 2000-01 season, was the Belfast Giants first season of Ice Hockey. They competed in the Sekonda Superleague and played home games at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Giants first took to the ice in the league in a game with the Nottingham Panthers, which they lost, 5-1, on 16 September 2000. Kory Karlander scored the Giants' first Superleague goal. The following evening the club secured its first-ever league win when they defeated the Bracknell Bees 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out. Not only did it turn out to be their only shoot-out success of the season but it was also their only win in Bracknell. The club would play the first 15 games of the season on the road before they finally had their opening home game on Saturday 2 December 2000 in front of a sell-out Odyssey Arena. Jason Bowen (born November 9, 1973) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player. He was a defenceman and left winger who played in 77 National Hockey League (NHL) games with the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers over parts of six seasons.
