Belchite
Belchite is a municipality and town in the province of Zaragoza, Spain, about 40 km southeast of Zaragoza. It is the capital of Campo de Belchite ''comarca'' (administrative region) and is located in a plain surrounded by low hills, the highest of which is Lobo. The surrounding area is one of the most arid places of Aragon. In 1122 Alfonso the Battler founded the Confraternity of Belchite to defend the frontier between the Christian kingdoms and al-Andalus. On June 15, 1809, during the Peninsular War French and Spanish forces fought in the Battle of María near the town. Between August 24 and September 7, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, loyalist Spanish Republican forces fought General Franco's rebel forces in the Battle of Belchite in and around the town. After 1939, a new town was built near the ruins of the old one, which remain a ghost town as a memorial to the war. Confraternity Of Belchite
The Confraternity of Belchite was an "experimental" community of knights founded in 1122 by Alfonso the Battler, king of Aragon and Navarre, and lasting until shortly after 1136. Members could enlist permanently or for a set time, vowing "never to live at peace with the pagans but to devote all their days to molesting and fighting them".Fletcher, "Reconquest and Crusade", 45–46. When the Emperor Alfonso VII confirmed the charter of the confraternity, he specified that it existed "for the defence of Christians and the oppression of Saracens". A Christian organisation dedicated to a holy war against Muslims (''reconquista''), its impetus and development coincide with that of the international military orders and it introduced the concept of an indulgence proportional to length of service. Battle Of Belchite (1937)
The Battle of Belchite refers to a series of military operations that took place between 24 August and 7 September 1937, in and around the small town of Belchite, in Aragon during the Spanish Civil War. Prelude After failed attempts to capture Brunete, the Republican military leadership decided to try a new series of offensives to slow down the Nationalist advance in the north. A new campaign, therefore, was planned for Aragon. The decision was based on political as well as military considerations, as the government saw it as a way to decrease Anarchist and Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (POUM) influence in the region by bringing in communist troops and incorporating three Anarchist divisions into the newly designated Army of the East under command of General Sebastián Pozas. Campo De Belchite
Campo de Belchite is a comarca in Aragon, Spain. It is located in Zaragoza Province, in the transitional area between the Iberian System and the Ebro Valley. The administrative capital is Belchite, with 1,647 inhabitants the largest town of the comarca. Some municipal terms of Campo de Belchite are part of the historical region of Lower Aragon. This comarca was the scenario of violent battles during the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1939) between fascist troops supporting general Franco and the loyalist Spanish Republican armies. Lobo Hill
Lobo, also known as El Lobo, Cabezo del Lobo, Cerro del Lobo and Mojón del Lobo, is a 630 m high mountain in the Campo de Belchite comarca, Zaragoza Province, Aragon, Spain, located about 3 km (1.86 miles) to the south of Belchite and 2 km (1.24 miles) east of Almonacid de la Cuba. This hill is named after the wolf ( es, lobo), for there were wolves in the area until the 19th century. Lobo Hill is arid and desolate-looking. It is barely covered with low and sparse clumps of dryland vegetation. There is a triangulation station at the top marked "LOBO" in large letters. The Battle of María (15 June 1809) saw a small Spanish army led by Joaquín Blake y Joyes face an Imperial French corps under Louis Gabriel Suchet. Background The Spanish campaign in early 1809 started with the Battle of Uclés. Battle After an inconclusive contest earlier in the day, Suchet's cavalry made a decisive charge that resulted in a French victory. Though the Spanish right wing was crushed, the rest of Blake's army got away in fairly good order after abandoning most of its artillery. María de Huerva is located southwest of Zaragoza, Spain. Alfonso The Battler
Alfonso I (''c''. 1073/10747 September 1134), called the Battler or the Warrior ( es, el Batallador), was King of Aragon and Kingdom of Navarre, Navarre from 1104 until his death in 1134. He was the second son of King Sancho Ramírez and successor of his brother Peter I of Aragon, Peter I. Peninsular War
The Peninsular War (1807–1814) was the military conflict fought in the Iberian Peninsula by Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom against the invading and occupying forces of the First French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. In Spain, it is considered to overlap with the Spanish War of Independence. The Spanish Republic (), commonly known as the Second Spanish Republic (), was the form of government in Spain from 1931 to 1939.
