Belair Line
The Belair line is a suburban rail commuter route in greater Adelaide, South Australia, that runs from the Adelaide railway station to Belair in the Adelaide Hills via the Adelaide-Wolseley line using diesel 3000/3100 class railcars. This part of the Adelaide–Wolseley line comprised two broad-gauge tracks until the Adelaide–Wolseley line was converted to standard gauge in 1995. Now two separate single-track lines run in parallel from Adelaide to Belair: the Belair commuter line – still broad gauge – and the line to Wolseley thence interstate – standard gauge – line. 3000 Class Railcar
The 3000 class and 3100 class are a class of diesel railcars that operate on the Railways in Adelaide, Adelaide rail network. Built by Commonwealth Engineering, Comeng and Clyde Engineering between 1987 and 1996, they entered service under the State Transport Authority (South Australia), State Transport Authority as a replacement for the South Australian Railways Redhen railcar, Redhen railcars, before later being operated by TransAdelaide and Adelaide Metro. Trains are typically coupled as multiple units, though the 3000 class are also able to run as single units when needed. In total, 70 railcars were built and are expected to be retired between 2030 and 2032. The fleet underwent 3 major refurbishments. Sleeps Hill Railway Station
Sleeps Hill was a former railway station that served a number of ballast quarries for the South Australian Railways (SAR). It was approximately 11–12 km from Adelaide railway station. History From 1909, a branch line, parallel to the main line and the Clapham branch line, served the Sleeps Hill quarries. The branch became the second main line in 1915, and the quarries were worked by a backshunt from Eden Hills. For a short time, from 1916, Sleeps Hill was the Southern limit of SAR suburban train workings, until the double track passed through the new tunnels to Eden Hills. The station was relocated to the south of the quarry sidings in the 1940s and removed when Lynton station was opened in the mid-1950s. Dual Gauge
Dual gauge railroad track has three or four rails, allowing vehicles of two track gauges to run on it. Signalling and sidings are more expensive to install on dual gauge tracks than on two single gauge tracks. Dual gauge is used when there is not enough room for two single tracks or when tracks of two different gauges meet in marshalling yards or train stations. Hawthorn railway station was located on the Belair line, in the inner southern Adelaide suburb of Hawthorn, 7.5 kilometres from Adelaide railway station. History Hawthorn was opened sometime in the 1910s. It runs parallel to Egmont Terrace, and is located 500 metres south of Unley Park station. It consists of two earth-filled concrete faced platforms, one each side of the dual lines, which were originally both broad gauge. Each platform had a timber and iron open passenger shelter, and there was a ticket office at the foot of the western platform which was staffed only at peak hours in the 1960s. Millswood Railway Station
Millswood railway station is located on the Belair line in Adelaide. Situated in the Adelaide suburb of Millswood, it is from Adelaide station. History The station opened circa 1910. The platforms were constructed of earth-filled concrete each side of the dual tracks, which were both broad gauge until 1995. There were timber framed, iron clad open passenger shelters on each platform. The two outbound Unley Park and Hawthorn stations had similar shelters. A ticket office was provided on the Up (western) platform until being demolished in 1985, and the original shelters were removed in March 1988 and replaced with the bus stop type shelters seen at some stations on the TransAdelaide network.
