Bekkjarvik
Bekkjarvik is a village in Austevoll municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northeastern coast of the island of Selbjørn. The village has a population (2019) of 577 and a population density of . The village is an old trading post, with an inn that has been in operation since the 17th century. There was also a barrel factory. Today, the inn is still in operation and most of the economy centers around the seasonal fishing industry. Bekkjarvik Church has been located in this village since 1895. The Selbjørn Bridge runs from Bekkjarvik across a small strait to the nearby island of Huftarøy. Bekkjarvik Church
Bekkjarvik Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Austevoll Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Bekkjarvik on the eastern part of the island of Selbjørn. It is one of the five churches for the Austevoll parish which is part of the Fana prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1898 using plans drawn up by the architect J. Sandnæs. The church seats about 180 people. History A royal decree from 14 December 1895 approved the construction of a chapel at Bekkjarvik. The architect J. Sandnæs was hired to design the building. Construction on the new church was completed in 1898. The building was a long church with a rectangular nave and a somewhat narrower, straight-ended chancel. Selbjørn
Selbjørn is an island in Austevoll municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island is the second largest in the municipality (after Huftarøy). Most of the population lives along the northern and eastern coastlines of the island. The commercial centre of Selbjørn is the village of Bekkjarvik, where Bekkjarvik Church is located. Name Selbjørn is based on the old Norwegian word ''Salbjǫrn'' meaning the bear in the saddle. The interpretation is that sailors and fishermen used Selbjørn as replacement for a more ancient "Hund" meaning quarry. However, "Hund" is the same as the Norwegian word for dog and "Hund" in the meaning of dog was according to old tradition something not to be mentioned at sea. The result being Salbjorn or Selbjørn as the new word for "Hund" (quarry). The island's name was used in naming the fjord that lies immediately to the south, Selbjørnsfjorden. Huftarøy is the largest island in the municipality of Austevoll in Vestland county, Norway.
