Begumpet Air Force Station
Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad, also known as Hyderabad Old Airport, is a civil enclave located in Begumpet. The airport is home to the Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy (RGAA), the Telangana State Aviation Academy and the Begumpet Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force. Begumpet Airport used to be the only international airport of Hyderabad, until the opening of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on 23 March 2008. After the opening of the new airport, Begumpet Airport ceased all commercial operations. The last and final flight to take off was a Singapore Airlines flight at 23:40 on 22 March 2008. The Airports Authority of India, or AAI, is a public sector enterprise under the ownership of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. Deccan Airways Limited was a commercial airline based at Begumpet Airport in the erstwhile Hyderabad State. It was owned by the Nizam of Hyderabad and Tata Airlines. History Founded in 1945, it was one of the nine airlines existing in India during independence. The airline was a joint venture of Nizam Government of erstwhile Hyderabad State and Tata Airlines. 71 per cent of Deccan Airways was owned by the Nizam's Government and the rest was owned by Tata Sons and others. Commercial operations were launched with a fleet of three aircraft in July 1946, operating a twice weekly service between Madras and Delhi, with halts at Hyderabad, Nagpur, Bhopal and Gwalior. The Pratt & Whitney JT8D is a low-bypass (0.96 to 1) turbofan engine introduced by Pratt & Whitney in February 1963 with the inaugural flight of the Boeing 727. It was a modification of the Pratt & Whitney J52 turbojet engine which powered the US Navy A-6 Intruder and A-4 Skyhawk attack aircraft. The Antonov An-148 ( ua, Антонов Ан-148) is a regional jet designed and built by Antonov of Ukraine. Development of the aircraft was started in the 1990s, and its maiden flight took place on 17 December 2004. The aircraft completed its certification programme on 26 February 2007.
