Beech (genus ''Fagus'') is a genus of deciduous trees in the family Fagaceae, native to subtropical (accessory forest element) and temperate (as dominant element of Mesophyte, mesophytic forests) Eurasia and North America. There are 14 accepted species in two distinct subgenera, ''Englerianae'' and ''Fagus''. The subgenus ''Englerianae'' is found only in East Asia, distinctive for its low branches, often made up of several major trunks with yellowish bark. The better known species of subgenus ''Fagus'' are native to Europe, western and eastern Asia and eastern North America. They are high-branching trees with tall, stout trunks and smooth silver-grey bark. The European beech ''Fagus sylvatica'' is the most commonly cultivated species, yielding a utility timber used for furniture construction, flooring and engineering purposes, in plywood, and household items. Beechwood Hall
The H. G. W. Mayberry House, also known as Beechwood Hall, is a historic antebellum plantation house built in 1856 in Franklin, Tennessee. Plantation house Beechwood Hall was the manor house of one of the three largest plantations in Williamson, prior to the American Civil War. It had more than in area, and had many enslaved people laboring on it. The mansion's original owners were Sophronia Hunter Mayberry and Henry George Washington Mayberry. It includes Greek Revival and Italianate style architectural elements. The other two contenders for Williamson County's largest plantation are those of the Samuel F. Glass House plantation, and the "Ravenswood" plantation (James H. Wilson House), both also NRHP-listed. Harewood and Beechwood, also known as Woods School, are two historic homes which are located roughly four miles apart in Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The school was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. History and architectural features Harewood was originally built as a farmhouse sometime around 1788. The original structure is located behind the main house that was erected in 1906. Beechwood (Vanderlip Mansion)
Beechwood is a Hudson River estate in Scarborough-on-Hudson, in Briarcliff Manor, New York. The estate was most notably the home of Frank A. Vanderlip and his family, and is a contributing property to the Scarborough Historic District. The house and property were owned by the Vanderlip family from 1906 to 1979. The property is now a 37-condominium complex as the result of a development project that began in the 1980s. Contemporarily, Beechwood is known for being a filming location of the 1970 film ''House of Dark Shadows'', and a filming location and the primary setting of '' Savages'', a 1972 Merchant Ivory film. In June 2016, ''Money Man: Frank Vanderlip and the Birth of the Federal Reserve'' premiered there. The film documents Vanderlip's life and was filmed at Beechwood. Beechwood is a historic house at 495 Main Street in Southbridge, Massachusetts. Built in 1868, it is prominent locally as a fine early example of Stick style architecture, and as one of the first houses to be built that became one of the city's upper-class neighborhoods. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Description and history Beechwood is located near the transition point on the west side of downtown Southbridge between its commercial area and adjacent residential parts of Main Street. It is set on the south side of Main Street, between South and Marcy Streets. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a complex cross-gabled roof configuration and a mostly clapboarded exterior. Beechwood (Astor Mansion)
Beechwood is a Gilded Age mansion and estate located at 580 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island best known for having been owned by the Astor family. Part of the Bellevue Avenue Historic District, the first version of the residence was built between 1852 and 1853 and designed in the Italianate style by Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux. Following a fire in 1855, Vaux rebuilt the house with modified plans. Richard Morris Hunt renovated the estate in 1881 after it was bought the year before by William Backhouse Astor, Jr. History Beechwood was built as a marine villa for New Yorker Daniel Parish, a clothing merchant whose operations extended to Southern cities.
