Bedum
Bedum (; gos, Beem) is a former municipality and a town in the northeastern Netherlands. Populated by inhabitants in , Bedum is one of the larger of Groningen's several satellite towns. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of De Marne, Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. Bedum is the site of three supermarkets, several pubs, and a leaning church tower, dubbed "the leaning tower of Bedum". Footballer Arjen Robben was born in Bedum (23 January 1984). Bedum has a railway station - Bedum railway station. The leaning tower Bedum's 36-metre tower of the St Walfridus church has been calculated as now leaning at a greater angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If both towers were the same height, Bedum's would have a greater displacement by 6 cm. Arjen Robben
Arjen Robben (; born 23 January 1984) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a winger. He was known for his dribbling skills, speed, ball control and long-range shots. Robben is regarded as one of the best players of his generation and was often lauded as among the best wingers in the world in his prime. Robben first came to prominence with Groningen, for whom he was player of the year for the 2000–01 Eredivisie season. Two years later he signed for PSV, where he became the Netherlands' Young Player of the Year and won an Eredivisie title. Onderdendam
Onderdendam is a village in Het Hogeland municipality in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 600 in January 2017. History The village is first mentioned in 1252 as "et ulderna domme". Even though it seemingly translates to "below the dam", the etymology is unclear. Onderdendam developed in the 16th and 17th century at the intersection of land- and waterways. In 1653, the Boterdiep was built which further enhanced its position, and it became a village of warehouses and traders. The Dutch Reformed church is a small domed church built in 1840 as a replacement of the church of . The court house was built in 1804 as a wide white plastered building on the main street. Eemsmond (; en, Ems Mouth) is a former municipality with a population of 15,864 in the north of the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. History The municipality of Hefshuizen was established on 1 January 1979 by merging the municipalities of Uithuizen and Uithuizermeeden. Winsum
Winsum () is a town and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 the municipality merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Eemsmond to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. The town of Winsum was officially established in 1057 as the fusion of three historic villages: Obergum (North), Winsum (center) and Bellingeweer (South). The majority of the town's 8,000 inhabitants commute to the nearby city Groningen. The town boasts two traditional Dutch wind mills, two historic churches, two canals, and one of the Netherlands' oldest taverns. The two mills, "De Ster" ("The Star") and "De Vriendschap" ("The Friendship") were built in 1851 and 1801 respectively. Ten Boer
Ten Boer () is a village and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands, in the province of Groningen. The municipality had a population of in ; the village of Ten Boer has approximately 4,600 inhabitants. In 2019, it was merged into municipality of Groningen. History The village was first mentioned in 1301 as "conventum de Bure", and means "near the house". Ten Boer is a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village on a grid structure. In 1301, a Benedictine monastery for nuns was established in Ten Boer. In 1485, it was incorporated into the monastery of Thesinge. Boterdiep
Boterdiep (Gronings: ''Botterdaip''; translation: Butter Deep) is a canal in the Province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It was intended for the inland navigation. The name relates to the dairy products transported through the canal. It used have its source in the centre of Groningen, but has been rerouted to the . History In the 15th century, the Cleisloot provided a connection to Bedum north of the city of Groningen. In 1625, the ditch was transformed into a canal which resulted in Zuidwolde being cut into two parts. In 1653, the Boterdiep was extended to Onderdendam In 1660, it was extended to Kantens, and reached Uithuizen in 1695 where it ended in a little harbour. From the 17th century until the beginning of the 20th century, the Boterdiep was a main inland canal, and was aligned on either side by towpaths.
