Thomas Beddoes
Thomas Beddoes (13 April 176024 December 1808) was an English physician and scientific writer. He was born in Shifnal, Shropshire and died in Bristol fifteen years after opening his medical practice there. He was a reforming practitioner and teacher of medicine, and an associate of leading scientific figures. He worked to treat tuberculosis. Beddoes was a friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and, according to E. S. Shaffer, an important influence on Coleridge's early thinking, introducing him to the higher criticism. The poet Thomas Lovell Beddoes was his son. A painting of him by Samson Towgood Roch is in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Mick Malcolm Millis Beddoes, widely known as Mick Beddoes, is a Fijian politician and businessman from Nadi, who led the United Peoples Party (formerly the United General Party) from 2000 to 2013, and was the Leader of the Opposition at the time of the military coup of 5 December 2006. He was also the Chief Executive of the World Netball Company, and was Chairman of the organising committee for the 2007 World Netball Championships, but announced his resignation on 24 January 2006, citing a possible conflict of interest, as his company would be working as a ground operator during the championships. Ivor William Gilmour Beddoes (28 April 1909 – 14 March 1981) was a British matte painter, sketch and storyboard artist, costume and set designer, painter, dancer, composer and poet. He is best known for his film work, spanning more than thirty years, from ''Black Narcissus'' and '' The Red Shoes'' to ''Star Wars'' and ''Superman''. Early life and education Beddoes was born in Muswell Hill, North London, the eldest child of Rex and Helen (née Laird) Beddoes. As a child he studied the piano and joined in with his younger sister Gwen's dance classes. Richard Herbert Beddoes ( – 24 August 1991) was a Canadian sports journalist. He was a columnist for ''The Vancouver Sun'' and '' The Globe and Mail'' and later appeared on television and radio. Early life Beddoes was born in Daysland, Alberta at his family's farm residence. He referred to his home town as "Sheep Tracks, Alberta". He attended the University of Alberta, first in the agriculture program, then transferring to its education faculty. Career In 1951, Beddoes joined the '' Edmonton Bulletin, '' just before that historic newspaper folded. Later that year, he joined the ''Vancouver Sun'' as a police reporter, writing his first sports columns by late 1951. Thomas Lovell Beddoes (30 June 1803 – 26 January 1849) was an English poet, dramatist and physician. Biography Born in Clifton, Bristol, England, he was the son of Dr. Thomas Beddoes, a friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Anna, sister of Maria Edgeworth. He was educated at Charterhouse and Pembroke College, Oxford. He published in 1821 ''The Improvisatore'', which he afterwards endeavoured to suppress. His next venture, a blank-verse drama called ''The Bride's Tragedy'' (1822), was published and well reviewed, and won for him the friendship of Barry Cornwall. Beddoes' work shows a constant preoccupation with death. In 1824, he went to Göttingen to study medicine, motivated by his hope of discovering physical evidence of a human spirit which survives the death of the body. Clayton Beddoes (born November 10, 1970) is a Canadian ice hockey coach and former professional ice hockey centre. He played two seasons in the National Hockey League. He last coached the Italian team HC Bolzano, and has coached the Italian national team at two World Championships. Playing career He spent four years playing college ice hockey at Lake Superior State University between 1990 and 1994, earning All-NCAA Second Team honors along with NCAA's Championship All-Tournament Team and All-CCHA Second Team distinction his senior year. He also served as the Lakers' team captain in his final year at LSSU. Alex Beddoes (born 9 July 1995) is a runner and athlete from the Cook Islands who has represented the Cook Islands at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Pacific Games, and Pacific Mini Games. Career Beddoes first participated in the Oceania Closed Junior Championships. There, he successfully defeated Guamanian Cory Morrison at tennis. He competed in the 2013 Pacific Mini Games in Mata Utu, and then at the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Port Vila, where he won gold in the 800 meters. Ronald Alfred Beddoes (14 September 2012 – 1 November 2000) was an Anglican Priest. He was born on 14 September 1912, educated at St Chad's College, Durham and ordained deacon in 1936 and priest in 1937. He was President of the Durham Union for Easter term of 1936. After a curacy at Dawdon, County Durham he was Priest in charge of Grindon. He then held incumbencies at Greatham and Easington (including during the 1951 Easington Colliery explosion) until his appointment as the fourth Provost of Derby Cathedral in 1953.
