Beat (1998 Film)
''Beat'' is a 1998 Japanese film. Directed by Amon Miyamoto, the film's narrative is set in Okinawa in the 1960s, during the military occupation by the American government. The plot was inspired by ''Naminoue no Maria'', a novel by the Okinawan writer Eiki Matayoshi. ''Beat'' was screened during Critics' Week at the 1998 Venice International Film Festival. Amon Miyamoto
Amon Miyamoto (; born January 4, 1958, in Tokyo) is a theater director. He has directed numerous productions in Japan and worldwide, including musicals, straight plays, opera, kabuki, and other art genres. In 2004, he became the first Japanese director to direct a musical on Broadway when he directed the revival of ''Pacific Overtures''. That production received four Tony Award nominations. Miyamoto made his directing debut with his original musical ''I Got Merman'', winning the National Performing Arts Festival Award. He is a recipient of the Matsuyo Akimoto Award of the Asahi Performing Arts Awards. He served as the inaugural artistic director of Kanagawa Arts Theater (KAAT) from 2010 to 2014. Eiki Matayoshi
is a contemporary Japanese writer. His novels are always set in the Okinawa archipelago, and he is considered one of the most important contemporary novelists from Okinawa. One of his earliest novels, ''Jōji ga shasatsu shita inoshishi'' (ジョージが射殺した猪 - "The Wild Boar that George Shot"), published in 1978, became very famous for being inspired by a true, controversial story. A soldier of the US occupation forces in Okinawa shot a local man, and during the trial he declared that he mistakenly took him for a wild boar. The US soldier was declared innocent, arousing a big debate among the locals. (born November 16, 1975) is a Japanese actress and former idol singer.
