Bob Beamon
Robert Beamon (born August 29, 1946) is an American former track and field athlete, best known for his world record in the long jump at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968. By jumping , he broke the existing record by a margin of and his world record stood for almost 23 years until it was broken in 1991 by Mike Powell. The jump is still the Olympic record and the second-longest in history unassisted by wind. Early life Robert Beamon was born in South Jamaica, Queens, New York, to Naomi Brown Beamon and grew up in the New York Housing Authority's Jamaica Houses. When Beamon was eight months old, his mother died from tuberculosis, and, as a result of his stepfather's incarceration, he was placed into the care of his maternal grandmother, Bessie. When Beamon was attending Jamaica High School, Larry Ellis, a renowned track coach, discovered him. Beamon later became part of the All-American track and field team. Autry Beamon Jr. (born November 12, 1953) is a former professional American football safety who played for three National Football League (NFL) teams. College career Beamon played college football at East Texas State University, now East Texas A&M University, and is in the university's Athletic Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame citation says that at age 16 he was the youngest college player in the country in 1970. He is still the only player in his college's history to be a four-time first team All-Lone Star Conference selection. He is in both the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor and the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame. Professional career In the 1975 NFL draft the Minnesota Vikings chose Beamon in the 12th round (draft pick 311 overall). Charlie Beamon
Charles Alfonzo Beamon (December 25, 1934 – May 3, 2016) was an American pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Baltimore Orioles from to . Listed at 5' 11", 195 lb., he batted and threw right handed. Beamon was born in Oakland, California, where he graduated from McClymonds High School. He made his debut with the Orioles in September 1956, pitching a four-hit, 1–0 shutout against the New York Yankees at Memorial Stadium. He did strike out nine batters in the process, including Billy Martin three times. Beamon played from 1953 through 1961 for eight different teams in nine Minor League seasons, going 89–69 with a 3.76 ERA in 226 pitching appearances. Clifford "Trey" Beamon (born February 11, 1974) is an American former professional baseball player. He spent three seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a left fielder and right fielder. Beamon bats from the left side, throws with his right hand, and was at one time listed as tall and weighing 210 pounds. Career summary After a prep career at W. T. White High School in Dallas, the Pirates chose Beamon in the second round of the 1992 MLB draft, with the 61st overall selection. Beamon advanced quickly through the minors, and after he batted .334 in 1995 as a 21-year-old with the Calgary Cannons of the AAA Pacific Coast League, Baseball America honored him as the organization's top prospect. Beamon struggled to establish himself on the MLB, however.
