The governor of Gagauzia (, ) is the highest political position in Gagauzia, an autonomous territorial unit of the Republic of Moldova. They chair the Executive Committee of Gagauzia and are an ''ex-officio'' member of the Cabinet of Moldova. Powers The position is created by the 14th article of the law on the legal status of Gagauzia No. 344-XIII (December 23, 1994), which entered into force on 14 January 1995. All state authorities in Gagauzia are subordinate to the governor. The governor is elected by universal, equal, direct, secret and free suffrage on an alternative basis for a term of 4 years. One and the same person can be a governor for no more than two consecutive terms. They must be a citizen of Moldova over 35 years old and know the Gagauz language. The governor can issue decisions and decrees valid throughout the territory of Gagauzia. Gagauzia
Gagauzia () or Gagauz-Yeri, officially the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (ATUG), is an Administrative divisions of Moldova, autonomous territorial unit of Moldova. Its autonomy is intended for the local Gagauz people, a Turkic languages, Turkic-speaking, primarily Eastern Orthodox Church, Orthodox Christian ethnic group. Bessarabia, previously the eastern half of the Moldavia, Principality of Moldavia, was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1812. At the end of World War I, all of Bessarabia – including Gagauzia – was annexed to the Kingdom of Romania. A Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina, Soviet invasion and occupation began in June 1940, but the territory was again occupied by Romania from 1941 to 1944, after the latter joined the Axis powers and helped invade the USSR. Evghenia Guțul (born 5 September 1986; or ), also rendered Yevgenia Gutsul () and Eugenia Guțul, is a Moldovan Gagauzian jurist and politician, who has served as Governor of Gagauzia since 19 July 2023. In April 2024 she was indicted in a criminal case with the Anticorruption Court of Moldova. As Governor, she has sought to have closer relations with Russia. Executive Committee Of Gagauzia
The Executive Committee of Gagauzia (; ; ) is the chief executive body of the Autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia, a territorial autonomous unit within the Republic of Moldova. It comprises a diverse array of officials responsible for governing various administrative and strategic departments. By law, the Committee is elected by the People's Assembly of Gagauzia in its first sitting after the elections, following the proposals of the ''BaÅŸkan''. In case the ''BaÅŸkan'' is unable to fulfill its duties or the post becomes vacant, the first vice president of the Executive Committee takes over its duties. The Committee has the right to initiate legislation in the People's Assembly. Comrat
Comrat (, ; , ) is a city and municipality in Moldova and the capital of the autonomous region of Gagauzia. It is located in the south of the country, on the Ialpug River. In 2014, Comrat's population was 20,113, of which the vast majority are Gagauzians. History Comrat was first settled as early as 1443, with other sources claiming it was founded in 1789. Irina Vlah
Irina Vlah (; ; born 26 February 1974) is a Moldovan politician and archdeacon who served as Head of the autonomous region of Gagauzia since 2015 to 2023. Previously, she served as member of the Moldovan Parliament from 2005 to 2015. She is the first woman to lead her region. The unification of Moldova and Romania is the idea that Moldova and Romania should become a single sovereign state and the political movement which seeks to bring it about. The Party of Regions of Moldova (PRM; ) is a political party in Moldova. It was founded on September 23, 2011, and registered on October 18, 2011. In 2018, it had about 1,200 members. Mihail Formuzal (born 7 November 1959) is a Moldovan politician of Gagauz people, Gagauz ethnicity, who was the governor of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia from December 2006 to March 2015. Early life and career Mihail Formuzal was born on 7 November 1959, in Beșghioz, Ceadîr-Lunga, in what is now Gagauzia, into a large family of peasants. After graduating from elementary schools (1966–1977) of his native village, in 1977 he was enrolled in the military service, within the Soviet Navy.
