Qakh Rayon
Qakh District (; ; ) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the north of the country, in the Shaki-Zagatala Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Zagatala, Shaki, Samukh, Yevlakh, as well as the Kakheti region of Georgia and the Russian Republic of Dagestan. Its capital and largest city is Qakh. As of 2020, the district had a population of 57,200. Geography The region is dominated by hot and subtropical climate. However mountainous areas are rather cold. Annual rain precipitation varies from 300mm (in the south) to 1600mm in mountain areas. Meadows, water resources, forests, and fertile soils are providing space for agricultural development, especially for walnut, chestnut production. Heavy rains and snowmelts from mountains often result in a flood. The region also has one of the biggest Natural Reserves in Azerbaijan named “Ilisu Natural Reserve”. Mammad Mammadov
Mammad Jabrail oglu Mammadov (Azerbaijani: Məmməd Cəbrayıl oğlu Məmmədov; 1920 – 24 January 1945) was an Azerbaijani Red Army Senior Sergeant and a Hero of the Soviet Union. Mammadov was posthumously awarded the title on 10 April 1945 for his actions during the Vistula–Oder Offensive, during which he reportedly killed 40 German soldiers while surrounded. Early life Mammadov was born in 1920 in Baydarlı to a peasant family. After receiving seven years of education he graduated from the Nukha teacher training college in 1939. He worked in Almalı as a secondary school teacher. Mammadov was drafted into the Red Army on 10 October 1940. World War II Mammadov fought in World War II from June 1941. He became a medic in the 1st Company of the 1235th Rifle Regiment in the 373rd Rifle Division. On 31 August 1944 he was awarded the Medal "For Courage" for his actions. The title Hero of the Soviet Union () was the highest distinction in the Soviet Union, awarded together with the Order of Lenin personally or collectively for heroic feats in service to the Soviet state and society. The title was awarded both to civilian and military persons. Overview The award was established on 16 April 1934, by the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union. The first recipients of the title originally received only the Order of Lenin, the highest Soviet award, along with a certificate (грамота, ''gramota'') describing the heroic deed from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Because the Order of Lenin could be awarded for deeds not qualifying for the title of hero, and to distinguish heroes from other Order of Lenin holders, the Gold Star medal was introduced on 1 August 1939.
