Nepean Bay is a bay located on the north-east coast of Kangaroo Island in the Australian state of South Australia about south-south-west of Adelaide. It was named by the British navigator, Matthew Flinders, after Sir Evan Nepean on 21 March 1802. Extent & description Nepean Bay lies between Point Marsden and Kangaroo Head on the north-east coast of Kangaroo Island facing into Investigator Strait. Nepean Bay itself includes the following coastal inlets from west to east - Bay of Shoals, Western Cove and Eastern Cove. Investigator Strait
Investigator Strait is a body of water in South Australia lying between the Yorke Peninsula, on the Australian mainland, and Kangaroo Island. It was named by Matthew Flinders after his ship, HMS ''Investigator'', on his voyage of 1801–1802. It is bordered by the Gulf St Vincent in the northeast. Discovery and exploration It was named Investigator’s Strait by Flinders on Monday 29 March 1802. Extent Investigator Strait is bounded by Yorke Peninsula to its north and by Kangaroo Island to its south. Flinders identified its boundaries with the following adjoining bodies of water - Gulf St Vincent and Backstairs Passage. Beatrice Islet Conservation Park
Beatrice Islet Conservation Park is a protected area occupying the Beatrice Islets and adjoining intertidal areas in Nepean Bay on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. It is located about east of the town of Kingscote. It was dedicated in 1967 for 'conservation of wildlife habitat' replacing previous statutory protection dating back to 1909. A management philosophy for the conservation park published in 1987 supports the use of the park as a 'feeding and roosting habitat for waterbirds'. The conservation park which is about in size, occupies part of a sandspit extending from Cape Rouge to the immediate north of Kingscote. The Beatrice Islets which originally supported bushes of African boxthorn which, when cleared in either the 1960s or the 1970s, resulted in erosion and destabilisation of both islets to the extent that both were described as being 'a mudflat/cocklebed' which is submerged at high water. American River Aquatic Reserve
__NOTOC__ American River Aquatic Reserve was a marine protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island in waters of the coastal lagoon known as Pelican Lagoon, in existence from 1971 to 2016. From 2012, the Pelican Lagoon Sanctuary Zone has fallen within the Encounter Marine Park. Pelican Lagoon is probably the oldest marine protected area in South Australia, having been protected since 1914. It was classified as an IUCN Category II protected area. On 20 October 2016, the reserve was abolished. Spit (landform)
A spit (cognate with the word for a rotisserie bar) or sandspit is a deposition (geology), deposition shoal, bar or beach landform off coasts or lake shores. It develops in places where re-entrance occurs, such as at a cove's headlands, by the process of longshore drift by longshore currents. The drift occurs due to waves meeting the beach at an oblique angle, moving sediment down the beach in a zigzag pattern. This is complemented by longshore currents, which further sediment transport, transport sediment through the water alongside the beach.
