Baxter House is a historic home located near Edom, Virginia, Edom, Rockingham County, Virginia. The house dates to about 1775, and is a single pile, double-pen dwelling consisting of two abutted two-bay, two-story log structures set on limestone foundation. It was built by Scottish settler George Baxter, whose son George A. Edom is an unincorporated community located in Rockingham County, Virginia, Rockingham County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is located along State Route 42 (Virginia), State Route 42 at the crossroads with State Route 721, north of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Harrisonburg and southeast of Singers Glen, Virginia, Singers Glen. Linville Creek flows through the village. Near Edom on January 14, 1794, Dr. Jesse Bennett performed the first Caesarian section and oophorectomy in the United States, operating on his wife to give birth to their daughter. Rockingham County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 83,757. Its county seat is the independent city of Harrisonburg. Along with Harrisonburg, Rockingham County forms the Harrisonburg, VA, Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also home of the Rockingham County Baseball League. History Settlement of the county began in 1727, when Adam Miller (Mueller) staked out a claim on the south fork of the Shenandoah River, near the line that now divides Rockingham County from Page County.
