''Bawa Thanthayar'' ( my, ဘဝသံသရာ; ) is a 1956 Burmese black-and-white drama film, directed by Thukha starring Zeya, May Thit, Thukha and Aye Kyu. It is one of the most famous films in the history of Burmese cinema and was only released at the end of the year, but was the highest grossing film of 1956. Thukha ( my, သုခ, ; 14 January 1910 – 7 December 2005) was a six-time Burmese Academy Award winning film director, writer, song writer, script writer, film actor and film producer. His film production company, Thukha Films Company, won Best Picture Award for twice. Thukha directed 33 films and is considered the most successful Burmese film director. Biography Born Thein Maung in the Irrawaddy delta in British Burma, Thukha began writing poems as a middle school student. He became familiar with classical Burmese music at an early age thanks to his grandfather, a harpist. Thukha studied at Kyaiklat and Pyapon National Schools. Thukha began his writing career at age 19 with a short fiction work "Zabe Pwint" ("Jasmine Petal") in ''Kawi Myetmhan'' magazine under the pen name Sein Thein Dan. May Thit ( my, မေသစ်; born Khin Thit 1925 – 2001) was a Burmese actress and singer. She won Best Actress Award for 1960, Best Supporting Actress Award for 1964 and 1976 in Myanmar Motion Picture Academy Awards. She was famous around between 1950s and 1990s. Early life May Thit was born on 1925 to parents, Municipal Officer, U Ko Ko Gyi and Daw Than Shwe in Bago, British Burma. She studied education until middle school. May Thit dropped out of school after graduating from middle school because she was more interested in film art than education. She applied for a job as a hobby film actress at A1 Film Company. A1 Film Company had chosen May Thit as the new film actress. She became a film actress under the name 'May Thit' given by A1 Film Company from her original name Khin Thit. Zeya (Burmese Actor)
Zeya ( my, ဇေယျ ; 12 June 1916 – 7 October 1996) was a Burmese Academy Award winning film actor and director. He was also a famous body builder. Biography Zeya was born Hla Maung in Nyaunggon village in Upper Burma during the British colonial rule. The 8th of 10 siblings, Zeya left school only third grade to help out with his parents' plantation. He married Than Tin, the daughter of a Mandalay jewellery merchant. They would have nine children. Zeya became a professional body builder. At age 27, Zeya won the Zeyar Maung (Mr. Zeyar) title in 1943 given by Sagaing Body Building Association. In 1946, he won Shwe Man Maung (Mr. Golden Mandalay). Zeya made film debut in 1946. In 1956, he won the Burmese Academy Award in ''Bawa Thanthaya'' (Life's Samsara). The cinema of Burma has a long history dating back to the 1910s. The person who created the first silent film was Ohn Maung (Burma's first producer and director). Start of the Burmese cinema Burma's first film was a recording of the funeral of Tun Shein - a leading politician of the 1910s, who campaigned for Burmese independence in London. It was captured with a second-hand camera by Ohn Maung and was screened at the Royal Cinema, near Scott Market (now Bogyoke Market), which belonged to a Mr Achar, a friend of Ohn Maung. Despite its documentary nature, the Burmese public was very proud of the film, which opened with the notice "Please accept our apologies for the poor quality of the film". The Myanmar Motion Picture Academy Awards are presented annually to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Burmese Film Industry of Myanmar. The awards ceremony has been held annually since 1952. Each winner is presented with a golden statue and in recent years also a cash prize.
