Battle Of Loikaw (2022)
The 2022 Battle of Loikaw was a battle for the city of Loikaw, in Myanmar's Kayah State, between January and July 2022. The State Administration Council's Tatmadaw forces attacked the city at the beginning of 2022, which was being held by the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force and local People's Defence Force groups. The fighting caused over 90,000 people in Loikaw Township to flee. Prelude Since 1949, ethnic Karenni militias have waged a low-level insurgency in Myanmar's Kayah State, where they make up the majority of the population. While intense clashes broke out between 2010 and 2012, they died down for the most part after democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi was elected. Tensions rose higher than ever after the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, where Karenni militias and local PDF groups (anti-junta civilian militias) fought against the Tatmadaw for control of Kayah State. Loikaw
Loikaw (, ) is the largest city and the capital of Kayah State, also known as Karenni State, in Myanmar. It is located in the Karen Hills area, near the State's northern tip, just above an embayment on the Pilu River. The inhabitants are mostly Kayah people, Kayah (Karenni people, Karenni). Myanmar's largest hydropower plant (built by the Japanese as war reparation) is located about east of Loikaw at Lawpita Falls. The town of Loikaw comprises 13 Wards of Myanmar, urban wards, namely Naungya, Daw-ukhu, Mainglon, Mingala, Dhammayon, Zaypaing, Shwetaung, Landama, Dawtanma, Dawnoeku, Shansu, and Minsu wards. Loikaw Township () is a township of Loikaw District in the eastern part of Kayah State in Myanmar (Burma). The principal town lies at Loikaw. Pekon Township
Pekon Township (; also spelled Pekhon, Phekhon, Pekong, Pecong, Pékon) is a township of Kalaw District in the Shan State of Myanmar. The principal town is Pekon. The largest settlement in the township is Mobye, a village tract in the east of the township. Part of a popular tourist place and bird watching site, Inle Lake and Inlay Lake Wetland Sanctuary, lies in this township. Mobye
Mobye (; also spelt Mobre or Moe Bye) is a village tract within Pekon Township, Shan State, Myanmar. It is located on the southern end of the Mobye Reservoir located south of Inle Lake and contains the lowest point within Pekon Township at . The village of Mobye is located within the village tract along with 35 other villages in close proximity. Geography Mobye is located on the border with Kayah State, 10 miles northwest of its the Kayah capital Loikaw. The village tract is connected to Pekon, the township's principal town, and Loikaw through waterways, railways and a roadway. The Mobye Dam, located within the village, is built along the Pilu River (also called the Baluchaung River). Together with the Lawpita Dam, the dams power the Lawpita Power Plant system. Bawlakhe () is a town in the Kayah State of eastern part of Burma. History Bawlakhe was originally known as Bawlake. The British official, James George Scott, wrote that local inhabitants in the 1890s claimed that Poe Bya Hla had ruled as the fifth ruler of the Karenni State of Bawlake. Bawlake was most likely founded during the early wars of the Konbaung Dynasty, perhaps around 1760. Scott suggested it was founded before 1783. The 2021 Battle of Loikaw was an engagement between the Tatmadaw against ethnic Karenni militias and local PDF civilian guerrillas. The battle began on 21 May 2021, and was one of the first engagements of the current Myanmar Civil War in Kayah State. Prelude Since 1949, ethnic Karenni militias have waged a low-level insurgency in Myanmar's Kayah State, where they make up the majority of the population. While intense clashes broke out between 2010 and 2012, they died down for the most part after democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi was elected in 2015.
