Battle Formation (1997)
The 1997 Battle Formation was the second and final NJPW Battle Formation, Battle Formation List of major NJPW events, event produced by New Japan Pro-Wrestling, which took place on at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. It was a massive success, drawing a crowd of about 60,000 fans and the revenue generated from ticket sales amounted to $5,000,000. Ten mock combat, professional wrestling matches occurred at the event. The Card (sports)#Main event, main event was a non-title Different Style Fight, in which the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, IWGP Heavyweight Champion Shinya Hashimoto took on the debuting Naoya Ogawa, a former judoka who won seven medals in the World Judo Championships and a silver medal in the Judo at the 1992 Summer Olympics, 1992 Summer Olympics. Ogawa got a shocking upset win by knocking out Hashimoto with a choke. The result set the stage for a lengthy rivalry between the two that resulted in a series of matches. New Japan Pro-Wrestling
(NJPW) is a Puroresu, Japanese professional-wrestling Professional wrestling promotion, promotion founded on January 13, 1972, by Antonio Inoki, and based in Nakano, Tokyo. It is currently majority owned by card-game company Bushiroad, with TV Asahi and Amuse Inc. owning minority shares of the promotion. Naoki Sugabayashi has served as the promotion's Chairman since September 2013, while Hiroshi Tanahashi has served as the president of the promotion since December 2023. Owing to its TV program aired on TV Asahi, NJPW is the largest and longest-running professional wrestling promotion in Japan. Their biggest event is the January 4 Tokyo Dome Show (currently promoted under the Wrestle Kingdom banner) held each year since 1992. In addition to promoting professional wrestling matches, NJPW has also showcased mixed martial arts fights on some of its live events. The promotion was owned by Yuke's from 2005 until 2012.
