Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park
Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park is a metropolitan park in Central Ohio, owned and operated by Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks. The park is within the Pleasant and Prairie townships, southwest of Columbus. It is the largest park in the Metro Parks system, with . The park encompasses lands and creek beds north & south of the confluence of the Big & Little Darby Creeks. Unique features include restored tallgrass prairie areas totalling that house a group of 10 American bison, a large nature center with exhibits about the exceptional biodiversity of Big Darby Creek, and a Fort Ancient mound. Thirteen miles of the Big Darby Creek and Little Darby Creek flow through the park. Much of the land for the park was donated by the Battelle Memorial Institute. Little Darby Creek (Ohio)
The Little Darby Creek is a tributary to the Darby Creek System in central Ohio. The creeks are part of the Scioto River drainage basin. Little Darby Creek runs from an area near the Lafayette-Plain City Road Bridge downstream to the confluence with Big Darby Creek near the Darby Creek Metro Park. The village of Georgesville, Ohio forms the western edge of the Confluence. The Little Darby and Big Darby were listed as a state Scenic River in 1984. The creeks were listed as national Scenic Rivers in 1994. Little Darby Creek for many years appeared to be bigger than Big Darby Creek at their confluence. This was due to a concrete fill dam across the path of the Little Darby Creek just north of the confluence. It was locally known as Oakie's dam. The Franklin County Metro Park System later removed this structure. The Little Darby creek bed has returned to it natural condition and the presence of the dam is now very hard to detect. Fort Ancient is a name for a Native American culture that flourished from Ca. 1000-1750 CE and predominantly inhabited land near the Ohio River valley in the areas of modern-day southern Ohio, northern Kentucky, southeastern Indiana and western West Virginia. Although a contemporary of the Mississippian culture, they are often considered a "sister culture" and distinguished from the Mississippian culture.
