Bathsheba At Her Bath (Hayez)
''Bathsheba at Her Bath'' (Italian: ''Betsabea al bagno'') is an 1834 history painting by the Italian artist Francesco Hayez. It depicts the biblical story of Bathsheba who is spied bathing by the Israelite king David her future husband. It was a popular theme for artists from the Renaissance era onwards. Hayez painted the scene in the style of the ascendant romanticism of the 1830s. He had earlier produced a '' painting of Bathsheba'' for William I of Württemberg featuring a very different composition. Francesco Hayez
Francesco Hayez (; 10 February 1791 – 12 February 1882) was an Italian painter. He is considered one of the leading artists of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan, and is renowned for his grand historical paintings, political allegories, and portraits. Biography Training and early work Francesco Hayez was from a relatively poor family from Venice. His father, Giovanni, was a fisherman of French origin while his mother, Chiara Torcella, was from Murano. Francesco was the youngest of five sons. Hayez displayed a predisposition for drawing since childhood. He was placed at a very early age in the Venetian studio of his uncle, the antiquarian Giovanni Binasco, who hoped to train him as a restorer of paintings. William I (; 27 September 178125 June 1864) was King of Württemberg from 30 October 1816 until his death. Upon William's accession, Württemberg was suffering crop failures and famine in the "Year Without a Summer", in 1816. It features the biblical figure of Bathsheba in a Nude (art), nude scene, who is watched bathing by the Israelite king David. She is shown facing away from the viewer and wearing a single bangle on her arm while David can be seen at a high vantage point at the top of the painting. Numerous paintings had been produced from the Renaissance era onwards featuring the scene. It was the first of three paintings Hayez would produce featuring Bathsheba. Hayez appears to have produced the work on his own initiative without a commission.
