Bath School Disaster
The Bath School disaster, also known as the Bath School massacre, was a series of violent attacks perpetrated by Andrew Kehoe upon the Bath Community Schools, Bath Consolidated School in Bath Charter Township, Michigan, Bath Township, Michigan, United States, on May 18, 1927. The attacks killed 38children and 6adults and injured at least 58other people. Prior to the explosions at the school, Kehoe had murdered his wife, Nellie Price Kehoe, and Arson, set fires using Incendiary devices, timed devices at his farm. Arriving at the site of the school explosion, Kehoe died when he set off explosives concealed in his truck. Kehoe, the 55-year-old school board treasurer, was angered by increased taxes and his defeat in the April5, 1926, election for Clerk (municipal official), township clerk. Bath Charter Township is a charter township of Clinton County in the state of Michigan in the U.S. As of the 2020 census, the township population was 13,292, an increase from 11,598 at the 2010 census. Fragmentation is the process by which the casing, shot, or other components of an anti-personnel weapon, bomb, barrel bomb, land mine, IED, artillery, mortar, tank gun, autocannon shell, rocket, missile, grenade, etc. are dispersed and/or shattered by the detonation of the explosive filler. The correct term for those pieces is "fragments” (nicknamed “splinters” or “shards”). Preformed fragments can be of various shapes (spheres, cubes, rods, etc.) and sizes and are normally held rigidly within some form of matrix or body until the high explosive (HE) filling is detonated. The resulting high-velocity fragments produced by either method are the main lethal mechanisms of these weapons, rather than the heat or overpressure caused by detonation, although offensive grenades are often constructed without a frag matrix.
