Batei Mahse
The Batei Mahse () is an apartment complex built from 1857 to 1890 in the Jewish Quarter (Jerusalem), Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, intended to house the city's poorer residents. History Construction The complex is the first modern Jewish Housing cooperative, housing initiative built in the Land of Israel. The purpose of the building was to build shelters for poor residents (a kind of financial welfare). The initiative for its establishment was started by Kollel Hod, an organization founded by Jews from the Netherlands and Germany donating to the Jewish Quarter during the period of the Old Yishuv. The construction of the complex enabled the community to grant apartments to poor families for a period of three years for free or for a Rent regulation, controlled fee. At the end of the 19th century, housing prices rose in Israel, and many Jewish families found themselves unable to pay full rent to their landlords, leaving them homeless. Baron Wilhelm Carl von Rothschild (Yiddish: שמעון וואלף רוטשילט; May 16, 1828 – 25 January 1901) was a banker and financier of the House of Rothschild. Life and career Wilhelm Carl von Rothschild was the son of Baron Carl Mayer von Rothschild of Naples and Adelheid Hertz. He was known by some as "The Tzadik of the Rothschild House." He strongly supported many Orthodox Jewish institutions and studied in Yeshivas. He married his cousin Mathilde Hannah von Rothschild, the second oldest daughter of Anselm von Rothschild, a chief of the Vienna House of Rothschilds in 1849. The Arab Legion () was the police force, then regular army, of the Emirate of Transjordan, a British protectorate, in the early part of the 20th century, and then of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, an independent state, with a final Arabization of its command taking place in 1956, when British senior officers were replaced by Jordanian ones. Creation In October 1920, after taking over the Transjordan region from the Ottomans, the United Kingdom formed a unit of 150 men called the "Mobile Force", under the command of Captain Frederick Gerard Peake, to defend the territory against both internal and external threats. The Mobile Force was based in Zarqa. 80% of its men were drawn from the local Chechen community. It was quickly expanded to 1,000 men, recruiting Arabs who had served in the Ottoman Army. 1948 Palestine War
The 1948 Palestine war was fought in the territory of what had been, at the start of the war, British-ruled Mandatory Palestine.
