Baz Bastien
Joseph Aldège Albert "Baz" Bastien (August 29, 1919 – March 15, 1983) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender, head coach, and general manager. He played five games for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League in 1945 but spent most of his playing career with the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League. He later became the Hornets' head coach and general manager and served in several front-office positions with National Hockey League clubs, most notably as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1976 until he died in a car crash in 1983. Playing career Bastien began his playing career in 1939 with the Port Colborne Sailors of the Ontario Hockey Association Senior A League. Pierre Bastien (born 1953 in Paris) is a French musician, composer, and experimental musical instrument builder. Life and career Bastien began building mechanical-based musical instruments at an early age, using items such as metronomes, cymbals, and pulleys. In 1977, he began collaborating with Pascal Comelade and composing music for dance companies. He performed in ensembles such as Operation Rhino, Nu Creative Methods, and Effectifs de Profil. In 1986, he formed his own orchestra, Mecanium, composed of Meccano machines which play various instruments, such as Chinese lute, Moroccan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, and violin. These machines were often driven by the rotation of old turntables. By the 1990s, Mecanium consisted of up to 80 machine 'musicians', and toured various art and music festivals, including events in Norway, Australia, Japan, Canada, Poland, and the United States. He has worked as assistant coach at both the college and professional level since 2014. Playing career During his collegiate years, Bastien played as a linebacker for UAB, appearing in 44 games and serving as a three-year starter. His performance on the field was notable for its defensive contributions, which laid the groundwork for his transition into a coaching career shortly after completing his playing tenure. Louis Marie Jules Charles Bastien (December 21, 1869 in Obernai, near Strasbourg – April 10, 1961) was a French Esperantist and a quartermaster in the French army. In 1899 he married Marguerite Pfulb (1879–1941); the couple had three daughters and two sons. In school he learned mathematics, classical French literature, Latin and Greek and learned to compose Latin verse. After a year of preparatory studies at l'Ecole Sainte-Geneviève in Versailles he entered l'Ecole Polytechnique in 1887 at the age of 17.
