Bastiaan Quartet
The Bastiaan Quartet was a German string quartet from Berlin (1945-1970). It was named after the primarius Johannes Bastiaan. In 1955, the ensemble won 2nd prize at a competition in Liège. It was represented at festivals in Berlin and Helsinki. Concert tours have taken the quartet to the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, South Africa and Japan. Members * 1. String Quartet
The term string quartet can refer to either a type of musical composition or a group of four people who play them. Many composers from the mid-18th century onwards wrote string quartets. The associated musical ensemble consists of two violinists, a violist, and a cellist. The string quartet was developed into its present form by composers such as Franz Xaver Richter, and Joseph Haydn, whose works in the 1750s established the ensemble as a group of four more-or-less equal partners. Since Haydn the string quartet has been considered a prestigious form; writing for four instruments with broadly similar characteristics both constrains and tests a composer. String quartet composition flourished in the Classical era, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert each wrote a number of them. Johannes Bastiaan
Johannes Hans Bastiaan (1 February 1911 – 11 October 2012) was a German violinist. He was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic for over 40 years. From 1945 to 1970, he served as primarius of the Bastiaan Quartet. Life Bastiaan was born in 1911 in Nuremberg as the son of the Dutch musician Gerrit Bastiaan. He attended primary schools in Berlin. When he was eight years old he received violin lessons from his father. From 1920 to 1924, he was taught by Robert Zeidler in Berlin. From 1925 to 1928, he attended the orchestra school in Berlin, where Carl Seidel was one of his teachers. From 1928, he studied violin and chamber music with Rudolf Deman at the Universität der Künste Berlin. From 1931 to 1933, he attended the violin class of Max Rostal. After that he was his private pupil for a short time. Max Strub then taught him further at the Musikhochschule from 1933. Rosen Aus Dem Süden
Rosen aus dem Süden (''Roses From the South''), Op. 388, is a waltz medley composed by Johann Strauss II in 1880 with its themes drawn from the operetta ''Das Spitzentuch der Königin'' (''The Queen's Lace Handkerchief''). Strauss dedicated the waltz to King Umberto I of Italy. The waltz was first performed at the regular Sunday concerts of the Strauss Orchestra conducted by Eduard Strauss on 7 November 1880 at the Musikverein in Vienna. Its themes drawn from the operetta are the act 1 "Trüffel-Couplet" and the act 2 romance "Wo die wilde Rose erblüht" ("Where the Wild Rose Blossoms"). The act 2 romance most certainly inspired the title of this waltz. The waltz ranks among the "Waltz King's" magnificent works and is still regularly performed today at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert. Schatz-Walzer
Schatz-Walzer ("Treasure Waltz"), Op. 418, is a Viennese waltz by Johann Strauss II composed in 1885. The melodies in this waltz were drawn from Strauss' operetta ''Der Zigeunerbaron'' ("The Gypsy Baron"), which premiered to critical acclaim on 24 October 1885. ''Der Zigeunerbaron'', a Hungarian-influenced work, remained Strauss' best-remembered operetta after ''Die Fledermaus''. The waltz version was first performed on 22 November that year in the concert hall of the Vienna Musikverein, with Eduard Strauss conducting. Strauss often presented music from his operettas as new and independent orchestral works, following the example of fellow operetta composer Jacques Offenbach.
