Bassett is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henry County, Virginia, Henry County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,100 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Martinsville micropolitan area. The town was founded along a rail line by the same family that later started Bassett Furniture. Bassett Furniture's headquarters have remained in Bassett since it began in 1902. History The John D. Bassett High School, Eltham Manor, and R.L. Stone House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town of Bassett was originally part of Horsepasture, Virginia. After John D. Bassett started a general store on his families land, the population started to grow around it and eventually his store incorporated a postal service. Philpott Dam is a concrete, gravity dam on the Smith River in Franklin and Henry counties in the U.S. state of Virginia. It impounds Philpott Lake. Philpott Dam is located about above the mouth of the Smith River. It is about upstream from Bassett, Virginia. The Smith River is a river in the U.S. states of Virginia and North Carolina. It is a tributary of the Dan River, which it joins at Eden, North Carolina.
