Bassel Khaiat (Arabic: باسل خياط, born 29 August, 1977 in Damascus, Syria) is a Syrian actor, working in theatre, television, and film. Early life Khaiat was born in Damascus, Syria, and has a brother named Mohammed. Khaiat started acting at eight years old. He applied for admission at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts, but was rejected. He reapplied the following year, was accepted, and graduated in 1999, the same year as Kosai Khauli and Sulafa Memar. He was an athletic child and grew up in a supportive environment for the arts. His father was a big fan of the movies and his mother came from a musical family. Khaiat had a difficult upbringing, forcing him to work from a young age. Bassel Shehadeh ( ar, باسل شحادة) (January 31, 1984 – May 28, 2012) was a Syrian Christian film maker, producer, IT Engineer, environmental and cultural activist, and a well-known civil activist during the Syrian uprising in 2011 to 2012. He was a pioneer in organising peaceful protests in Damascus denouncing the government’s crackdown of the Arab Spring. Shehadeh was arrested while protesting with fellow artists in the al-Midan neighbourhood of Damascus. His camera captured and documented the assaults and bombardments conducted by the Syrian regime's forces on the city of Homs. He was detained without trial by the Syrian government in 2012 and was secretly executed in 2015.
