Retrieved through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=492344 on 2013-06-10 Description The height of this species attains 20 mm. The high, flat-based, cream-colored shell has a concavely conical shape. It is sharply angulated, thin, and finely reticulated. It shows a very faint nacre. Sculpture (mollusc), Sculpture: There are about twenty delicate threads, very nearly but not quite regular in thickness or distance, on the upper part of the body whorl. They slowly decrease in number on the previous whorls. The two (or three) which form the carina are thrown out a little on a projecting whitish fillet, which encircles the base of the whorls. This whitish fillet extends to the base, when it forms a narrow obliq ...

Rodolfo Amando Philippi
Rodolfo Amando (or Rudolph Amandus) Philippi (14 September 1808 – 23 July 1904) was a German–Chilean paleontologist and zoologist. Philippi contributed primarily to malacology and paleontology. His grandson, Rodulfo Amando Philippi Bañados (1905-1969), was also a zoologist and in order to avoid confusion in zoological nomenclature, the elder is referred to as "Philippi rumwiede to distinguish him from his grandson "Philippi añados. Early life Philippi was born in Charlottenburg, Berlin to Johann Wilhelm Eberhard Philippi, a Prussian government auditor, and his third wife Maria Anna Krumwiede (m. 1806). The father had five children from two earlier marriages and Philippi was the eldest from the third marriage. In 1818, Philippi, his younger brother Bernhard Eunom (1811–1852) and their mother went to Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, where they were educated at the Pestalozzian Institute founded by Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746–1827). The teaching included the use ...

Hadroconus Watsoni
''Hadroconus watsoni'' is a species of extremely small deep water sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Seguenziidae.Rosenberg, G. (2013). ''Hadroconus watsoni'' (Dall, 1927). Retrieved through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=492409 on 2013-06-10 Description (Original description by W.H. Dall) The height of the shell attains 5 mm. The small, white shell has a flatly conical shape, with a glassy minute nucleus of one whorl and seven subsequent whorls. The suture is closely appressed, not impressed. The whorls above the base are flat. The axial sculpture consists of many protractively flexuous extremely fine lines with wider interspaces over all the whorls. The cemented edges at the suture by their opacity look like a presutural band, but this is not reflected in the sculpture. The spiral sculpture on the spire consists of almost microscopic close striae. On the base there are about a dozen fine spir ...

Mattheus Marinus Schepman
Mattheus Marinus Schepman (17 August 1847 – 19 November 1919) was a Dutch people, Dutch malacologist. He was one of the foremost collectors of mollusc shells in the Netherlands, and was also high on the overall list of European collectors. Dutch collectors developed an interest in natural history specimens that were collected on worldwide expeditions since the 16th century. An interest in conchology led to numerous shell publications. In 1934 the Nederlandse Malacologische Vereniging (Netherlands Malacological Society) was founded. In commemoration of its 75th anniversary, a book honoring in detail the work of Mattheus Schepman was published. His research Schepman was both a collector and a methodical scientist, which combination "made his collection of great value to the entire malacological community." He was given the opportunity to study a collection by Max Carl Wilhelm Weber, Director of the Zoological Museum Amsterdam, Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). Many of the speci ...

Carinastele Niceterium
''Carinastele niceterium'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Calliostomatidae. Description (Original description by Hedley & May) The height of the shell attains 7 mm. The thin, imperforate shell has a conical-turbinate shape. Its colour uniform is pale cream and of silken lustre. The shell contains 5½ whorl, including a small pointed obliquely set protoconch of 1½ whorl. Sculpture : prominent spiral keels, three to the penultimate, ten to the body whorl, successively diminishing from the suture to the base. They are undercut below the narrow summit, parted by much broader flat interstices. These keels, apparently folds in the shell substance, are microscopically beaded by fine radial striae, represented in the interstices as hair lines. The protoconch does not share the adult sculpture, but is minutely malleated. The oblique aperture In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, ...

Charles Hedley
Charles Hedley (27 February 1862 – 14 September 1926) was a naturalist, specifically a malacologist. Born in Britain, he spent most of his life in Australia. He was the winner of the 1925 Clarke Medal. Early life Hedley was born in the vicarage at Masham, Yorkshire, England, the son of the Rev. Canon Thomas Hedley and his wife Mary, ''née'' Bush. On account of delicate health Hedley had only two years at Eastbourne College, but his education was continued by his father, a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He was mainly educated in the south of France; from boyhood he collected mollusc shells, and was greatly influenced by a French work on molluscan anatomy. In France he met George French Angas who gave him a letter of introduction to Dr. George Bennett of Sydney. Exploring in Oceania In 1881 Hedley went to New Zealand and in September 1882 to Sydney. He was suffering from asthma and after trying the dry interior found he was in better health when near the sea. He too ...
