Bartow High School
Bartow Senior High School is the only high school in Bartow, Florida. It resulted from a merger of the whites-only Summerlin Institute and Union Academy, a school for African Americans, after desegregation. History Summerlin Institute was founded in 1887 as the first public high school in Bartow, Florida. It was named after Jacob Summerlin who donated large amounts of land to the cities of Bartow and Orlando. This school was the first brick school in the United States located south of Jacksonville, Florida. It was also the only public military school in Florida. Union Academy dates to 1897 when it opened as an elementary school for African Americans. In 1923, a secondary school curriculum was added and Union Academy became a high school for African-Americans. Summerlin Institute was relocated to the corner of Broadway Avenue and Tharp Street, the current location of Bartow High School, in 1927. Bartow ( ) is a city and the county seat of Polk County, Florida, Polk County, Florida, United States. Founded in 1851 as Fort Blount, the city was renamed in honor of Francis S. Bartow, the first brigade commander of the Confederate Army to die in combat during the American Civil War. Bob Crawford (Florida Politician)
Robert Bruce Crawford III (born January 26, 1948) is an American former politician who served as Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and a legislator in the Florida State House and Senate. He graduated from Bartow High School. Crawford earned a Business and Finance degree from University of Miami. He worked as a financial planner and started a property management company with his wife, Nancy. Crawford was senate president from 1988 until 1990. As Senate President he helped push for funding of the Polk Parkway, created the largest transportation funding act in the state's history and guided the approval of a land preservation program that has since protected thousands of acres of environmentally sensitive land. Florida Gators Men's Basketball
The Florida Gators men's basketball team represents the University of Florida in the sport of basketball. The Gators compete in NCAA Division I's Southeastern Conference (SEC). Home games are played on Billy Donovan Court in the O'Connell Center, Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the university's Gainesville, Florida, Gainesville campus. The Utah Jazz are an American professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City.
