Joseph Barsalou (physician)
Joseph Barsalou (1600–1660) was a French apothecary and physician. Biography Joseph Barsalou was born in Agen in the south west of France. He came from a family of apothecaries that was originally from Narbonne. Joseph Barsalou received no formal medical training. His father handed down his knowledge of herbs and minerals. It is through his friendship with the Scaliger family that Joseph Barsalou gained access to the library of Julius Caesar Scaliger and his son Joseph Justus Scaliger. Julius Caesar Scaliger was a physician, philosopher and commentator of Aristotle. His son Josephus Justus Scaliger was a scholar, linguist and historian. Joseph Barsalou built on his traditional knowledge of herbs with an introduction to medicine and philosophy reading Galen, Aristotle and Pythagoras. Joseph Barsalou (businessman)
Joseph Barsalou (5 December 1822 – 17 May 1897) was a businessman and politician from Montreal, Lower Canada. Biography Barsalou had an early beginning in business with an apprenticeship in auctioneering at the age of 15. He quickly advanced in business and by 1853 was a partner in Benning and Barsalou, an enterprise mainly in auctioneering with some activity in real estate. He went on to other business ventures and bought a company with two partners which became the Canadian Rubber Company (now Uniroyal), and was its first president. The core of his business activities was the soap factory he founded with his sons in 1875 at the corner of rue Durham (now rue Plessis) and Ste-Catherines, which licensed soap recipes and brand names from a number of firms over the years, including the ''Tête de Cheval'' brand and ''Savon Barsalou''. Jean-Baptiste Barsalou (9 September 1706 18 March 1776) was from a business family in Montreal, his father having been a master tanner with his own business in that location. Due to the premature death of his father, Jean-Baptiste's family was divided up and he fell under the custody of an elder brother who ran the tannery and other business interests of the family. Jean began his working life in the fur trade as a voyageur for his uncle, Jean-Baptiste Neveu. By the early 1730s he had taken over the family tannery and entered into various business arrangements to further this enterprise.
