Barrington Watson
Basil Barrington Watson Order of Distinction, CD (9 January 1931 – 26 January 2016) was a Jamaican painter. Biography Born in 1931 January 9th in Lucea, Jamaica, Lucea, Barrington Watson made his original mark in Jamaica as a football player for Kingston College (Jamaica), Kingston College. However, he ultimately followed his artistic yearnings by enrolling at the Royal College of Art in London at the age of 20. Watson also studied at Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Lucea, Jamaica
Lucea () is a coastal town in Jamaica and the capital of the parish of Hanover. History Hanover, Jamaica's second smallest parish was founded on 12 November 1723 with Lucea as the capital and main city. From the middle of the 18th century, the farmers of Hanover provided the rest of Jamaica with most of its produce but mainly exported banana and logwood, which is used to make dyes. Fort Charlotte in Lucea was built in 1761. Alongside the fort is an impressive Georgian brick structure known as The Barracks, which was built in 1843 to provide shelter to the soldiers stationed there. In the early 20th century The Barracks became the educational center for the town and has now been transformed to become part of the Rusea's High School complex. In 1982 Rusea's High School was merged with the Hanover Secondary School and is still known as the Rusea's High School (Fort Charlotte). The Musgrave Medal is an annual award by the Institute of Jamaica in recognition of achievement in art, science, and literature.Webster, Valerie J. Originally conceived in 1889 and named in memory of Sir Anthony Musgrave, the founder of the Institute and the former Governor of Jamaica who had died the previous year, the medal was the first to be awarded in the Western Hemisphere. The medals were initially awarded as prizes in a cultural competition. In 1941, the Gold Medal was initiated and awarded in recognition of a "distinguished eminence". The first recipient of the gold medal was artist Edna Manley in recognition of her work promoting art and literature.
