Barrier Lake
Barrier Lake is a man-made reservoir at the north end of Kananaskis Country in Alberta, Canada. Highway 40 runs between the lake and Mount Baldy, on the eastern shore. It is entirely located in the Bow Valley Provincial Park. Barrier Lake was created by the former Calgary Power Company, now TransAlta, in 1947, for hydroelectric power generation on the Kananaskis River. The dam that impounds the lake is at the north end of the lake. The lake is also used for recreational activities, with hiking paths surrounding the lake (and cross-country skiing trails in the winter). Kananaskis Country
Kananaskis Country (abbreviated: K-Country) is a multi-use area west of Calgary, Alberta, Canada in the Rocky Mountain Foothills, foothills and front ranges of the Canadian Rockies. Its western edge borders Banff National Park and the Alberta-British Columbia border. The area is named for the Kananaskis River, which was named by John Palliser in 1858 after a legendary Cree Native. Covering an area of approximately , Kananaskis Country was formed by the Alberta Government in 1978 to provide an assortment of land uses and designations. Alberta Highway 40
Highway 40 is a south–north highway in western Alberta, Canada. It is also named Bighorn Highway and Kananaskis Trail in Kananaskis Country. Its segmented sections extend from Coleman, Alberta, Coleman in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, Municipality of Crowsnest Pass northward to the City of Grande Prairie and is currently divided into four sections. Route description The southernmost section is gravel; it runs for through the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, where it then becomes the Alberta Highway 734, Forestry Trunk Road to Alberta Highway 541, Highway 541, which has a combined length of .
