Barrie Uptown Theater
Barrie Uptown Theater (formerly Imperial 8 Cinema) was a movie theatre in downtown Barrie, Ontario, Canada. The cinema was built in 1937, and is home to the Barrie Film Festival. The building had 8 screens, though movies were only shown on 5 since its reopening. In the 60's it was 1 gigantic room and screen, with burgundy crush velvet pull up seats, with aisle lights and a uniformed usher with flashlight, also had a large full length upper balcony. Barrie is a city in Central Ontario, Canada, about north of Toronto. The city is within Simcoe County and located along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay. Although it is physically in the county, Barrie is politically independent. The city is part of the extended urban area in southern Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe, Greater Golden Horseshoe. Stinson Theatres
Stinson Theatres was a movie theatre chain in Central Ontario and the Georgian Triangle in Canada. History Founded in 1971 by Robert Stinson, Stinson Theatres grew from its original two-screen drive-in theatre in Barrie, Ontario, to 30 screens in six indoor locations and five screens at two drive-in locations. In 1996, Robert Stinson hired investment banker, Stan Medley, to take Stinson Theatres public. A new holding corporation was formed, Long Road Entertainment, Inc., and was listed on the US Pink Sheets in 2002, but Stinson Theaters was never put in the new holding company. Subsequently, plans to expand the company as a public company were abandoned and the public vehicle was sold to others and renamed in 2007. The Barrie Examiner
The ''Barrie Examiner'' was a daily newspaper published in Barrie, Ontario from 1864 to 2017. History The ''Examiner'' was founded in 1864. Publisher William Manley Nicholson launched the paper as an alternate to the ''Northern Advance'', which already had a strong political voice in the community of over 3,500 people. In the years since then, the ''Examiner'' has changed ownership and location several times. In 1889, Nicholson sold the newspaper to Andrew F. Hunter, who later wrote two volumes of the History of Simcoe County (1909). Hunter sold his interests in 1895 to James Alexander MacLaren, a former city editor at the ''Chatham Daily Banner''. Barrie Film Festival
The Barrie Film Festival is an annual film festival in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Since it began in 1997, the festival has expanded to include galas, a short-film competition, a director's brunch, educational workshops and guest Q&As. The festival briefly moved to the Bayfield cinema in 2009 when its prior venue, the Imperial Theatre, closed and changed hands. It later returned to the original venue when it was reopened as the Uptown; after the Uptown permanently closed in 2021, the 2022 festival was staged at various venues including the city's main commercial Galaxy Cinema, and the auditorium at Georgian College.
