The Peerage of England comprises all peerages created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union in 1707. In that year, the Peerages of England and Scotland were replaced by one Peerage of Great Britain. There are five peerages in the United Kingdom in total. English Peeresses obtained their first seats in the House of Lords under the Peerage Act 1963 from which date until the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999 all Peers of England could sit in the House of Lords. The ranks of the English peerage are, in descending order, duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. While most newer English peerages descend only in the male line, many of the older ones (particularly older baronies) can descend through females. Such peerages follow the old English inheritance law of moieties so all daughters (or granddaughters through the same root) stand as co-heirs, so some such titles are in such a state of abeyance between these. The Peerage of the United Kingdom is one of the five Peerages in the United Kingdom. It comprises most peerages created in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the Acts of Union in 1801, when it replaced the Peerage of Great Britain. New peers continued to be created in the Peerage of Ireland until 1898 (the last creation was the Barony of Curzon of Kedleston). The House of Lords Act 1999 reformed the House of Lords. Until then, all peers of the United Kingdom were automatically members of the House of Lords. However, from that date, most of the hereditary peers ceased to be members, whereas the life peers retained their seats. All hereditary peers of the first creation (i.e. those for whom a peerage was originally created, as opposed to those who inherited a peerage), and all surviving hereditary peers who had served as Leader of the House of Lords, were offered a life peerage to allow them to continue to sit in the House should they wish. Thomas Agar-Robartes, 1st Baron Robartes
Thomas James Agar-Robartes, 1st Baron Robartes (18 March 1808 – 9 March 1882), was a British politician. Background Robartes was the son of the Hon. Charles Bagenal Agar, youngest son of James Agar, 1st Viscount Clifden. His mother was Anna Maria Hunt, heiress of Lanhydrock, great-niece of Henry Robartes, 3rd Earl of Radnor and 4th Baron Robartes (which titles became extinct in 1757; see the Earl of Radnor 1679 creation for more information). He adopted the Robartes name by warrant in 1822 and inherited the Lanhydrock estate. He commissioned the architect George Gilbert Scott to renovate Lanhydrock House but in 1881 it was badly damaged by a fire in which his wife died of smoke inhalation. Political career Robartes was returned to Parliament for Cornwall East in 1847, a seat he held until 1868.
