Baron Deramore
Baron Deramore, of Belvoir in the County of Down, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 18 November 1885 for the Conservative Member of Parliament Sir Thomas Bateson, 2nd Baronet. His father Thomas Bateson had been created a baronet, of Belvoir Park in the County of Down, on 18 December 1818 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The barony was created with special remainder to the first Baron's younger brother George, who succeeded him as second Baron. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth de Yarburgh (died 1884), daughter and heiress of George John de Yarburgh, of Heslington Hall, near York, and assumed in 1876 by Royal licence the additional surname of de Yarburgh after the death of his father-in-law. In 1892 Lord Deramore assumed the surname of Bateson after, instead of before that of de Yarburgh. He was succeeded by his son, the third Baron. County Down
County Down () is one of the six counties of Northern Ireland, one of the nine counties of Ulster and one of the traditional thirty-two counties of Ireland. It covers an area of and has a population of 531,665. Robert De Yarburgh-Bateson, 3rd Baron Deramore
Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Wilfrid de Yarburgh-Bateson, 3rd Baron Deramore (5 August 1865 – 1 April 1936) was a British peer and an officer in the Yorkshire Hussars. He served as Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire from 1924 until his death in 1936. He was the eldest son of George de Yarburgh-Bateson, 2nd Baron Deramore, and his wife Mary Yarburgh (whose surname the family assumed in 1876). He was educated at Eton College. In April 1891, he was appointed a deputy lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire. He succeeded his father in the peerage in 1893. Commissioned into the Yorkshire Hussars as a second lieutenant on 4 January 1893, he was promoted captain on 28 April 1897, major on 18 June 1904, and lieutenant-colonel on 2 June 1915. Richard Arthur de Yarburgh-Bateson, 6th Baron Deramore (9 April 1911 – 20 August 2006) was a British architect, writer of erotic fiction, and a peer of the United Kingdom. Lord Deramore was educated at Harrow School and St John's College, Cambridge, and after graduation he earned a diploma from the Architectural Association School of Architecture. He worked as a charted architect in London, Buckinghamshire, and Yorkshire. During World War II, Lord Deramore served as a pilot in the RAFVR, flying low-level reconnaissance missions in the Mediterranean. After the war, he returned to his architectural practice, but also pursued other interests. He designed his own home, to replace the family seat at Heslington Hall. The Hall had been taken over by the RAF in the war and remained unoccupied afterwards, until it was sold to become the headquarters of the University of York in 1962. Sir Robert Bateson, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert Bateson, 1st Baronet DL (13 March 1782 – 21 April 1863) was an Irish baronet, landowner and Conservative politician. He was the only son of Thomas Bateson and his wife Elizabeth, youngest daughter of George Lloyd. On 18 December 1818, he was created a Baronet, of Belvoir Park, in the County of Down. Bateson entered the British House of Commons in 1830, sitting for Londonderry until 1842, when he was succeeded in the constituency by his eldest son Robert. He was a magistrate in County Down and represented it as a Deputy Lieutenant. On the 27 February 1857, the 4th Marquess of Londonderry conferred on him the honour to lay the foundation stone of the Londonderry Monument, better known today as the Scrabo Tower.
