Louis Nicolas Le Tonnelier De Breteuil
Louis Nicolas Le Tonnelier, Baron of Breteuil (14 September 1648, in Montpellier – 24 May 1728), baron of Preuilly and of Breteuil was an officer in the royal household of Louis XIV. He is also notable as the father of the mathematician Émilie du Châtelet. Biography Louis Nicolas Le Tonnelier was the youngest son of Louis Le Tonnelier. Former King's reader, he was sent in 1682 by Louis XIV to the Duke of Mantua as envoy. His mission was to ensure the application of the secret treaty signed with him, to monitor him and to assess France's chances in Mantua and Montferrat. Recalled to Paris in 1684, he sold his office as the King's reader and became, in 1698, the Introducer of the Ambassadors. Breteuil remained introducer until 1715 when he sold his office for 250,000 pounds to Joseph Magny, Marquis de Foucault. In 1697, Louis Nicolas Le Tonnelier married Gabrielle Anne de Froulay. François Victor Le Tonnelier de Breteuil (17 April 1686 – 7 January 1743 in Issy) was a French nobleman. He was minister for war twice under Louis XV. He was also chancelier, garde des sceaux de la Maison de la reine and commander, provost and grandmaster of ceremonies to the Order of the Holy Spirit (1721–1743). He was a member of the Le Tonnelier de Breteuil family. Émilie Du Châtelet
Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Châtelet (; 17 December 1706 – 10 September 1749) was a French natural philosophy, natural philosopher and mathematician from the early 1730s until her maternal death, death due to complications during childbirth in 1749. Her most recognized achievement is her translation of and commentary on Isaac Newton's 1687 book ''Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica'' containing basic laws of physics. The translation, published posthumously in 1756, is still considered the standard French translation. Her commentary includes a contribution to Classical mechanics, Newtonian mechanics—the postulate of an additional conservation law for total energy, of which kinetic energy of motion is one element. This led to her conceptualization of energy as such, and to derive its quantitative relationships to the mass and velocity of an object.
