Barnegat (lightship)
The United States lightship ''Barnegat'' (LV-79/WAL-506), is located in Camden, New Jersey, Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The Lightvessel, lightship was built in 1904 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 29 November 1979. History ''Barnegat'' was built in 1904 by the New York Shipbuilding Company in Camden. The vessel served from 1904 to 1924 as the Five Fathom Bank light station, lightship for Five Fathom Bank, which is located from the Cape May Lighthouse. The vessel was then used as a relief for the next two years. In 1927 the vessel was assigned to the Barnegat Lighthouse station. In 1942 the vessel was withdrawn from the Barnegat station to serve as an examination vessel at Edgemoor, Delaware, Edgemoor, Delaware. A lightvessel, or lightship, is a ship that acts as a lighthouse. It is used in waters that are too deep or otherwise unsuitable for lighthouse construction. Although some records exist of fire beacons being placed on ships in Roman times, the first modern lightship was located off the Nore sandbank at the mouth of the River Thames in London, England, by its inventor Robert Hamblin in 1734. Lightships have since been rendered obsolete by advancing lighthouse construction techniques, and by large automated navigation buoys. Construction The most important element of lightship design is a tall mast upon which to mount the light. Initially, these lights consisted of oil lamps that were run up the mast and could be lowered for servicing, while later vessels carried fixed lamps which were serviced in place.
