Barlovento, Santa Cruz De Tenerife
Barlovento (Spanish for windward) is a municipality in the northern part of the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands, and a part of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Barlovento is on the main highway which encircles the island. The land rises steeply from a small coastal plain, to the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente at Pico de la Cruz (2,350m) The majority of the municipality is rural, with the only town being Barlovento, where the ayuntamiento (municipal office) is, at 548m above sea level. Being in the cloudier North East of the island, with a short, rocky, coastline, there is less tourism than other municipalities, although there are a number of ''casas rurales'' for rent. There is, however, a large recreation zone and campsite at the ''Laguna de Barlovento'', an artificial reservoir, which is the largest area of freshwater on the island. Barlovento, Venezuela
Barlovento is a sub-region of Miranda (state), Miranda state, Venezuela. During Spanish colonization of the Americas, Barlovento was developed as estate owners founded cacao tree, cacao haciendas. The work on the estates was done by African slaves brought from what is now the Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola. These people were from the Kingdom of Kongo and Kingdom of Loango. There were also Yoruba people, Yoruba slaves. The culture of African and Spanish inhabitants has merged into the "drum dancing", Barlovento's typical Afro-Venezuelan celebration. This occurs particularly at the time of the feast of San Juan. Other events include the ''Entierro de la Sardina'' (Burial of the Sardine) and Day of the Dead. A syncretism has occurred where Catholicism, Catholic saints represent traditional African deities. Eduardo Valentín Serrano Torres (Caracas, February 14, 1911 – Caracas, October 13, 2008), was a Venezuelan popular musician, conductor and composer. He composed many important Venezuelan merengue Merengue is a musical form extended through all the Caribbean. The first occurrences of merengue in print in Venezuela are from scores of “dance merengue” of the second half of the 19th century. As a dance craze, merengue acquired popularity ...; one of his most important works was the song "Barlovento". He won the National Music Prize in 1988. He died on October 13, 2008, at the age of 97. Agoristenidae are a neotropical harvestman family of the Suborder Laniatores, in the superfamily Gonyleptoidea. Name The name of the type genus is a combination of Ancient Greek ''agora'' "gathering" and ''stenos'' "few", referring to the rarity of the family at the time of its discovery. Their coloring ranges from yellowish to dark brown. Some show yellow stripes or white or green patches. Distribution The subfamily Agoristeninae is endemic to the Greater Antilles.
