The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham () is a London borough in East London. The borough was created in 1965 as the London Borough of Barking; the name was changed in 1980. It is an Outer London borough and the south is within the London Riverside section of the Thames Gateway; an area designated as a national priority for urban regeneration. Barking was a local government district, and later civil parish and borough, in southwest Essex, England from 1882 to 1965. It was known as Barking Town from 1882 to 1931. The district included the town of Barking, eastern Beckton and the southwestern part of the Becontree estate. The district was within the Metropolitan Police District and experienced a steady increase in population during its existence. The area was suburban to London's conurbation region and was part of the Metropolitan Police District. Barking is a constituency in Greater London represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2024 by Nesil Caliskan of the Labour Party. Political history The area has elected Labour MPs since its creation in 1945, on strong majorities of over 20% of the vote, except for the results in 1983, 1987 and 1992. Margaret Hodge served as the MP for the seat from 1994 to 2024. The rise in support for the British National Party since the turn of the 21st century saw the party attain 16.9% of the vote at the 2005 general election, with the Labour vote reduced by over 13% compared to the 2001. The BNP out-polled the Liberal Democrats for third place and were just 27 votes behind the Conservatives. Party members and supporters were optimistic that the party would soon make a breakthrough into the UK parliament, and party leader Nick Griffin stood in Barking for the 2010 general election. Barking was an electoral division for the purposes of elections to the Greater London Council. The constituency elected two councillors for a three-year term in 1964, 1967 and 1970. The constituency was revised in 1973 and then elected one councillor for a four-year term in 1973, 1977 and 1981, with the final term extended for an extra year ahead of the abolition of the Greater London Council. History It was planned to use the same boundaries as the Westminster Parliament constituencies for election of councillors to the Greater London Council (GLC), as had been the practice for elections to the predecessor London County Council, but those that existed in 1965 crossed the Greater London boundary. ''Barking'' is the eighth studio album by British electronic group Underworld, released on 2 September 2010. The album debuted at number twenty-six on the UK Albums Chart, selling 5,146 copies in its first week. Composition and release The album is named after Barking, historically in Essex and now in Greater London. Each track on the album was written by band members Karl Hyde and Rick Smith in Essex, before being sent to well-known trance, drum and bass and dubstep producers. The album sees further collaboration with Mark Knight and D. Ramirez, whose 2009 single, "Downpipe", featured lyrics and vocals by Hyde. The lead single, " Scribble", produced with Welsh drum and bass producer High Contrast, was released on 28 June 2010. Barking RFC is an England, English rugby union team based in Barking, London, Barking, east London and currently play in the ninth tier of the English rugby union system, English rugby union league system, Essex 1. History Park Modern Old Boys The club was founded in 1930, under the name of Park Modern Old Boys.
