Jim Barkhouse
James Alfred Barkhouse (born May 3, 1940) is a former hardware store owner and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Lunenburg East and then Chester-St. Margaret's in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1984 to 1998 as a Liberal member. Early life and education He was born in Chester, Nova Scotia and studied at Acadia University. Before politics Barkhouse served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1958 to 1963 and worked at Sperry Gyroscope and Hermes Electronics. He was owner and manager of Reddens Hardware from 1971 to 1987. Political career Barkhouse entered provincial politics in the 1984 election, winning the Lunenburg East seat. He was re-elected in the 1988 election. In the 1993 election, Barkhouse was re-elected in the new riding of Chester-St. Margaret's. Joyce Barkhouse
Joyce Carman Barkhouse (May 3, 1913 – February 2, 2012) was a Canadian children's writer best known for writing historical fiction. She is the aunt of Margaret Atwood, with whom she co-wrote the children's book ''Anna's Pet''. Barkhouse achieved her greatest recognition for her novel ''Pit Pony.'' Education and family life Born in Woodville, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Harold Edwin Killam, a rural family physician, and his wife, Ora Louise (née Webster), Joyce was educated in Woodville until transferring to King’s County Academy in Kentville to complete grade twelve. After receiving a Teacher's License from the Provincial Normal College in Truro in 1932, she began teaching in Sand Hill. Family In 1939, she began teaching in Liverpool, Nova Scotia where she met Milton Joseph Barkhouse, a teller with the Royal Bank of Canada. Ron Barkhouse
Ronald Theodore Barkhouse (April 22, 1926 – April 7, 2014) was a merchant and politician in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Lunenburg East in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1974 to 1984 as a Progressive Conservative member. Early life and education He was born in New Ross, Nova Scotia, the son of Alfred S. Barkhouse and Anne Bertha Meister, and was educated at the Horton Academy. Career Barkhouse operated a wholesale lumber business and a general store. In 1951, he married Eleanor Plunket Grant. Barkhouse was a member of the municipal council for Chester from 1952 to 1967 and also served on the local school board. He served in the province's Executive Council as Minister of Mines and Energy.
