Barguna District
Barguna District (; ) is a district in Barisal Division, in southern Bangladesh. Barguna subdivision was established in 1969 and promoted to a district on 28 February 1984. Etymology There is not enough strong proof of naming the district. Some historians say that timber traders of the northern region came here to buy timbers and waited for the favoring flow (Baro - Gone) to overcome and from there the name "Baro-Gana" was derived. Others say that it was named after a famous Rakhine resident of this district while some say that the name came from a bawali named "Barguna". History Barguna district was in Sundarban area. In the evolution of time, people started clearing the forest by cutting down the trees and started to live here. Wood merchants used to come here to collect woods from the forest. Patharghata Upazila
Patharghata () is a coastal sub-district (upazila) within the Barguna District in Barisal Division, Bangladesh. It is one of six upazilas in the Barguna District, situated at the very south of the district. To the north of Patharghata Upazila, lies Bamna Upazila and Mathbaria Upazila of Pirojpur District, to the south is the Bay of Bengal, to the east are Barguna Sadar Upazila and the Bishkhali River, and to the west are Sharankhola Upazila of Bagerhat District and the Harinaghata River. Betagi () is an upazila of Barguna District in Barisal Division, Bangladesh. Geography Betagi is located at . It has 22,156 households and a total area of 167.75 km2. Demographics According to the 2011 Census of Bangladesh, Betagi Upazila had a population of 117,145 living in 27,922 households. 25,857 (22.07%) were under 10 years of age. Barguna Sadar Upazila
Barguna Sadar () is an upazila of Barguna District in Barisal Division, Bangladesh. Geography Barguna Sadar is located at . It has a total area of 454.39 km2. History In 1904, a thana (police outpost headquarters) was founded in Barguna. During the Bangladesh War of 1971, many people were murdered in Barguna town as well as Bengali fighters when retreating. 100 prisoners at the Barguna Jail were killed by the Pakistan Army on 29 and 30 November and they were later buried in a mass grave to the west of the Jail. By 3 December, Barguna had been captured by pro-independence militants. Demographics According to the 2011 Census of Bangladesh, Bamna Upazila had a population of 79,564 living in 19,537 households. 17,529 (22.03%) were under 10 years of age.
