Barcola () is a maritime neighbourhood of Trieste, Italy. It is a popular tourist destination with beaches and long promenades, near the Habsburg-established Miramare Castle. Barcola is highly valued for the high quality of life and the free access to the sea. The long and partly shady 5 km long waterfront of Barcola serves as a recreation area and city bathing beach of Trieste and is connected to the city center, Miramare, Sistiana but also partly to Grado by bus lines and regular shipping services. Vittoria Light
Vittoria Light (, ) also known as the Victory Lighthouse, is an active lighthouse in Trieste, Italy, serving the Gulf of Trieste. It is located on the Hill of Gretta (Poggio di Gretta), off the Strada del Friuli. At a height of it is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world. History The idea to raise a monument in the vicinity arose during World War I, following the Italian capture from Austria-Hungary of Kobarid in the Battles of the Isonzo and following the Battle of the Piave River. Originally the lighthouse was to rise on the coast of Istria near Pula. However, the location eventually chosen was the Hill of Gretta, due to its ideal height — above sea level — and the solid foundations of the former Austro-Hungarian fort Kressich, built there by the Austrian Empire between 1854 and 1857. Barcolana 2008 - Panoramio
The Barcolana () is a historic international sailing regatta organized by the Sailing Club of Barcola and Grignano (''Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano''). It takes place every year in the Gulf of Trieste on the second Sunday of October. The Barcolana is one of the most crowded regattas in the world. The Barcolana became the Guinness World Record holder in February 2019 when it was named "the greatest sailing race" with its 2,689 boats and over 16,000 sailors on the starting line. Paolo Rumiz. Paolo Rumiz (born 20 December 1947) is an Italian journalist and writer. He was born in Trieste and worked a journalist for the local ''Il Piccolo'' newspaper. Later he was editorialist for ''La Repubblica'' national newspaper. Starting from 1986, he mostly dealt with the situation in the Balkan area and wrote several articles on the War in Yugoslavia, and won the Hemingway Prize for his works on Bosnia. Bora (wind)
The bora is a northerly to north-easterly katabatic wind in areas near the Adriatic Sea. Similar nomenclature is used for north-eastern winds in other littoral areas of eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. Name It is known in Greek as (''mpóra'', pronounced ''bora'') and Italian as . In English, the name ''bora'' is used. The Serbo-Croatian name and Slovene are not etymologically related to ''bora''; they derive from Common Slavic ''burja'' 'storm' (from the verb ''*burĭti''), and the meaning 'bora' developed later. Claudio Magris (; born 10 April 1939) is an Italian scholar, translator and writer. He was a senator for Friuli-Venezia Giulia from 1994 to 1996. Life Magris graduated from the University of Turin, where he studied German studies, and has been a professor of modern German literature at the University of Trieste since 1978. He is an essayist and columnist for the Italian newspaper ''Corriere della Sera'' and for other European journals and newspapers. His numerous studies have helped to promote an awareness in Italy of Central European culture and of the literature of the Habsburg myth, a concept which he coined in 1963. Magris is a member of several European academies and served as a senator in the Italian Senate from 1994 to 1996.
