Barbara French Read, also known as Barbara Reed, (December 29, 1917 – December 12, 1963) was a Canadian-American film actress of the 1930s and 1940s, who appeared in 21 films during her career. Early life Born Barbara French Read on December 29, 1917, the daughter of contractor John Howard Read and Nancy Elizabeth Collier, in Port Arthur, Ontario. Read moved to California in the mid-1930s. She got her first movie contract while living in Laguna Beach, California, she was watching a film production in Laguna when she was spotted and offered a screen test, after which she entered a six-month contract with the production company. When she failed to receive any roles because of her lack of experience, she joined the Laguna Beach Players theater, where she acted in a new play each month for two years. Port Arthur, Ontario
Port Arthur was a city in Northern Ontario, Canada, located on Lake Superior. In January 1970, it was amalgamated with Fort William and the townships of Neebing and McIntyre to form the city of Thunder Bay. Port Arthur became the district seat of Thunder Bay District with the appointment in June 1871 of Delevan Decatur Van Norman as the district's first stipendiary magistrate. It is historically notable as a temporary (1882–1885) eastern terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). It served as a major transshipment point for lakers that carried cargo to Port Arthur from across the Great Lakes. CPR's completion to the east did little to affect the city's importance for shipping; the Canadian Northern Railway was constructed to serve the port, and it built numerous grain silos to supply lakers. Plot After his fiancée is abducted from a stagecoach and ends up dead, Chris Danning rides into the town of Coroner Creek seeking the man responsible. Hotel owner Kate Hardison asks him to escort home Abbie, the inebriated wife of rich rancher Younger Miles, but his motives are mistaken and Chris is beaten by Younger's men.
