Banovci, Vukovar-Syrmia County
Banovci (, sr-Cyrl, Бановци / Шидски Бановци, ), also known as Šidski Banovci, is a village located in the Vukovar-Syrmia County of Croatia, near the Serbian border. The village had a population of 256 as of the 2021 census. Originally settled in the 1730s as the new village of Vinkovački Banovci, it is today part of the Nijemci Municipality. The village of Banovci has undergone several name changes over the past, reflecting the shifting political landscapes of the region. Historically referred to as "Small Switzerland," Banovci has a rich cultural and historical legacy, influenced by its Danube Swabians Protestant settlers. Today, the village is primarily inhabited by a Serbs of Croatia, Serb community and is known for the local Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Venerable Mother Parascheva, and its local football club, NK Borac, established in 1940. Stari Banovci ( sr-cyr, Стари Бановци) is a suburban settlement in Serbia. It is located in the Stara Pazova municipality, in the region of Syrmia (Syrmia District), Vojvodina province. Stari Banovci, Banovci-Dunav and Novi Banovci form together urban settlement ''Banovci''. The population of the settlement as the whole is 16,000 people (2011 census). Name The name of the settlement in Serbian language, Serbian is plural. History In ancient times, Roman Empire, Roman fortress named Burgene existed at this location. The village of Banovci existed here since the 16th century, and perhaps even before that. Another two villages, Darinovci and Tusa, were situated at this location, but both were later resettled. According to the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman census from 1566/7, most of the inhabitants of Banovci were Serbs. In 1734, the population of the village was composed of 53 houses. Novi Banovci () is a settlement in Serbia by the Danube River. It is situated in the Stara Pazova municipality, in the Srem District, in Vojvodina province. It is located 5 kilometers away from Batajnica and 20 km from the capital, Belgrade. Novi Banovci is situated on the Belgrade-Novi Sad route. It has a Serb ethnic majority and its population totals 9,443 people (2011 census). Name The name of the town in Serbian is plural. History Following the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC, the settlement was known as Burgenae.
