Banlung ( km, បានលុង, ) is the capital of Ratanakiri Province in northeastern Cambodia, and is 636 kilometres from the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. The capital was moved from Veun Sai to Banlung in order to facilitate trade with Vietnam (prior to Veun Sai, the capital was Lumphat). Prior to 1979, Banlung was known as Labansiek. It is a relatively lively commercial centre; people from surrounding villages often come to the town market to sell their goods. Yeak Laom ( km, យក្សឡោម) is a commune (''khum'') in the Banlung Municipality of the Ratanakiri Province in northeastern Cambodia. It has a population of 1,855. Airavata Elephant Foundation
Airavata is a nonprofit organisation founded by Chenda Clais, Professor François-Xavier Roux and Pierre-Yves Clais, protecting the last captive Asian elephants in Ratanakiri Province in Cambodia, as well as protecting up to 100 hectares of the Katieng forest along the river close to the Katieng Waterfalls 10 Kilometer west from the Ratanakiri capitol, Banlung. Captive elephants in Cambodia Wars, and the time during which Cambodia was ruled by the Khmer Rouge reduced the population of Cambodias elephants, both in the wild as well as in captivity. Provinces Of Cambodia
Cambodia is divided into 25 provinces ( km, ខេត្ត, ). The capital Phnom Penh is not a province but an "autonomous municipality" ( km, រាជធានី, link=no, ; lit. 'Capital'), equivalent to a province governmentally and administered at the same level as the other 24 provinces. Phnom Penh has both the highest population and the highest population density of all provinces, but is the second smallest in land area. Lumphat
Lumphat ( km, លំផាត់) is a district in Ratanakiri Province, north-east Cambodia. In 1998, it had a population of 10,301. Lomphat, the former capital of Ratanakiri, is located in the district on the Srepok River. The town is home to fewer than 800 people. The district gives its name to the Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary, a preservation area for the many unique species indigenous to Northeast Cambodia. Administrative divisions of Cambodia have several levels. Cambodia is divided into 24 provinces (''Khaet''; km, ខេត្ត, ) and the special administrative unit Phnom Penh.
