Banksmeadow is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Banksmeadow is located 11 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Bayside Council. Banksmeadow sits on the northern shore of Botany Bay. History Banksmeadow is named in honour of naturalist Sir Joseph Banks, who travelled to Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770. Botany Bay is where they first landed ashore on 29 April 1770, when navigating around Australia on the Endeavour. During the early 1970s, there was extensive land reclamation in Botany Bay, creating a foreshore beach, the golf course and the large container port facilities of Patricks and Hutchison. Hillsdale is a suburb in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Hillsdale is located 6 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district in the Bayside Council. The suburb is named after Pat Hills, former Deputy Premier of New South Wales. The Division of Kingsford Smith is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division is named after Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, a pioneer aviator, and the first pilot to fly across the Pacific Ocean. Pagewood is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 8 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district. It is part of the Bayside Council. Pagewood has a mixture of residential and industrial areas. History Pagewood was originally known as "South Daceyville", before being renamed to "Pagewood" in 1929, to honour the late Alderman Fred Page, the Mayor of Botany Council in 1928. Matraville is located in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is approximately by road south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Randwick. History Matraville is named in honour of James Matra (1746–1806), an American sailor and diplomat, who was a midshipman on the voyage by Captain James Cook to Botany Bay in 1770.
