Banbridge Hockey Club
Banbridge Hockey Club is a hockey club based in Banbridge, County Down, Northern Ireland. The club was formed in 1897. Grounds The club's first home was at Millmount Green, off the Lurgan Road in Banbridge. In 1949, the club purchased grounds at Castlewellan Road. These continued to be used until 1998 when the need for an artificial-turf pitch meant a move to the new Banbridge District Council facilities at Havelock Park. In March 2007, plans were announced for the laying of a new replacement water-based surface. Notable players Men's internationals ; Edgar McCall was the first Banbridge player to be awarded an international cap when he represented Ireland against Wales in 1900. Irish Senior Cup (Men's Hockey)
The Men's Irish Senior Cup is the senior field hockey cup competition organised by Hockey Ireland, featuring men's teams from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Eugene Magee
Eugene Magee (born 1 April 1986) is an Ireland men's field hockey international. He was a member of the Ireland team that won the bronze medal at the 2015 Men's EuroHockey Nations Championship. He also represented Ireland at the 2016 Summer Olympics and at the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup. At club level he has won Men's Irish Hockey League, Irish Senior Cup and Kirk Cup titles with Banbridge. He has also scored for three clubs – HGC, KHC Dragons and Banbridge – in the Euro Hockey League. Early years, family and education Magee's hometown is Ballela in County Down. He completed his elementary education at All Saints Ballela. In his youth Magee initially played hurling, representing Down/South Down at minor level. Ulster Hockey Union
The Ulster Hockey Union is the governing body for field hockey in Ulster. It is affiliated to Hockey Ireland. It organises a number of leagues and cup competitions for clubs and schools in the province. These include the Ulster Senior League, the Kirk Cup and the Ulster Shield. Over 70 clubs are affiliated to the union. Foundation The modern Ulster Hockey Union was founded in May 2009 following the merger of the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association and the Ulster Women's Hockey Union. The UBIHA was originally formed in December 1896. Founding members of the original association included the North Down, Cliftonville and Antrim hockey clubs. Ulster Senior League (Men's Hockey)
The Ulster Senior League is a league competition for the first teams of men's hockey clubs affiliated to the Ulster Hockey Union of Hockey Ireland. Formation At a Special General Meeting of the Union held on 15 October 1897 in the Royal Avenue Hotel, Belfast, the clubs present resolved to form the Ulster Senior League. Kirk Cup
The Kirk Cup is the oldest hockey tournament in Ulster and the oldest provincial hockey trophy in Ireland. It has become a tradition since the 1966–67 season for the final to be played on Boxing Day, a date previously reserved for the Anderson Cup Final. Irish Junior Cup (Men's Hockey)
The Men's Irish Junior Cup is a knockout trophy played for field hockey clubs in Ireland. Entry is open to sides that do not qualify for the Irish Senior Cup and to the second teams of clubs that play in the Irish Senior Cup. The trophy was first played for in 1895, a year after the Senior version of the trophy. Historical format From its start in 1895 until the 1980s, the tournament was played in regional tournaments. The winners of the regional tournaments in Leinster, Munster, Ulster and at times Connacht would proceed through to semi-final matches. The finals were played in one weekend until 1935. The final was then moved to a separate weekend. The change was prompted by the circumstances of the 1934 finals. EuroHockey Club Trophy I
The EuroHockey Club Trophy I is an annual men's field hockey competition organised by the EHF for European hockey clubs. It is the second most prestigious European club competition, being one tier below the top men's European club competition the Euro Hockey League. In that sense, the ECT is hockey's equivalent of the UEFA Europa League. Format The tournament features 8 clubs from EHF member countries. Qualification Each year one of the 8 available league places is allocated to an EHF member country's national association. The clubs admitted are the clubs of those nations who finished ranked third to sixth in the previous year's Trophy II; the clubs of those two nations from the previous year's Trophy I; plus the clubs of those two nations promoted from the previous year's Challenge I.
