Banagher was a constituency represented in the Irish House of Commons until 1800. History Banagher had two members in the 1689 Patriot Parliament summoned by King James II. Banagher
Banagher ( or ''Beannchar na Sionna'') is a town in Ireland, located in the midlands, on the western edge of County Offaly in the province of Leinster, on the banks of the River Shannon. It had a population of 3,000 at the height of its economic growth in the mid-19th century; as of 2016, the population was over 1,700. Banagher was historically an important strategic location on the River Shannon and was one of the few crossing points between the provinces of Leinster and Connacht. It thus became a natural focus for a number of historical buildings, including a 19th-century Martello Tower and a number of castles around the town, which were built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The town used to be the focus of thriving river business and was an important stop on the Dublin to Limerick navigation. Sir Edward Hoare, 2nd Baronet (14 March 1745 – 30 April 1814) was an Anglo-Irish politician. He was the son of Sir Joseph Hoare, 1st Baronet and Catherine Somerville and was commissioned as an officer in the service of the 13th Light Dragoons, eventually attaining the rank of captain. Henry Prittie, 1st Baron Dunalley (3 October 1743 – 3 January 1801) was an Irish peer and Member of Parliament. Prittie was the son of Henry Prittie of Kilboy, County Tipperary. John Meade, 1st Earl of Clanwilliam (21 April 1744 – 19 October 1800), was an Anglo-Irish nobleman, known as Sir John Meade, 4th Baronet, until 1766. Elevated to the Peerage of Ireland, his debauchery and reckless spending led him to sell the family estate. Life The son of Sir Richard Meade, 3rd Baronet and his wife Catherine Prittie, daughter of Henry Prittie of Kilboy, he was born a few days before his father's death. He inherited a baronetcy and estates worth about £10,000 per year, in County Cork, County Kilkenny, and County Tipperary. He was returned as Member of Parliament for Banagher in 1764.
