Banagher
Banagher ( or ) is a town in Republic of Ireland, Ireland, located in the midlands, on the western edge of County Offaly in the province of Leinster, on the banks of the River Shannon. The town had a population of 3,000 at the height of its economic growth in the mid-19th century. According to the 2022 census of Ireland, 2022 census, its population was 1,907. Banagher was historically an important strategic location on the River Shannon and was one of the few crossing points between the provinces of Leinster and Connacht. It thus became a natural focus for a number of historical buildings, including a 19th-century Martello Tower and a number of castles around the town, which were built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The town used to be the focus of thriving river business and was an important stop on the Dublin to Limerick navigation. Richard Malone, 1st Baron Sunderlin (c.1738 – 14 April 1816) was an Anglo-Irish politician and peer.John Lodge and Mervyn Archdall, ''The Peerage of Ireland: Or, A Genealogical History of the Present Nobility of that Kingdom'', Volume 7 (J. 1783 Irish General Election
General elections were held in the Kingdom of Ireland in 1783, the first after the passing of the series of constitutional legal changes known as the Constitution of 1782, which lifted the substantial legal restrictions on the Irish parliament. Henry Prittie, 1st Baron Dunalley
Henry Prittie, 1st Baron Dunalley (3 October 1743 – 3 January 1801) was an Irish peer and Member of Parliament. Prittie was the son of Henry Prittie of Kilboy, County Tipperary. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Banagher in 1767, a seat he held until 1768. He then represented Gowran from 1769 to 1776 and County Tipperary from 1776 to 1790. Prittie was appointed High Sheriff of Tipperary in 1770. He was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Dunalley, of Kilboy, in the County of Tipperary on 31 July 1800. Lord Dunalley married Catherine Sadlier, daughter of Francis Sadlier. John Meade, 1st Earl of Clanwilliam (21 April 1744 – 19 October 1800), was an Anglo-Irish people, Anglo-Irish nobleman, known as Sir John Meade, 4th Baronet, until 1766. Elevated to the Peerage of Ireland, his debauchery and reckless spending led him to sell the family estate. The small town of Clanwilliam in Western Cape, South Africa is named after him. Peter Holmes (1731–1802) of Peterfield was an Irish High Sheriff and MP in the Parliament of Ireland. He was the son of Robert Holmes of Peterfield, County Tipperary. Peter was High Sheriff of Tipperary for 1772 and served as Member of Parliament for Banagher from 1761 to 1790. 1761 Irish General Election
The 1761 Irish general election was the first general election to the Irish House of Commons in over thirty years, with the previous general election having taken place in 1727. Despite few constituencies hosting electoral contests, the election was significant due to it taking place in a time of rising political awareness within the Irish public, with many being drawn to the cause of patriotism. Background Unlike England, which had passed the Triennial Acts in 1694, thereby requiring elections every 3 years (and following 1716 every 7 years), Ireland had passed no similar pieces of legislation. As a result, the only limit on a term of parliament was the life of the monarch. Richard Trench (politician)
Richard Trench (1710–1768) was an Irish politician and the ancestor of the Earls of Clancarty. He was the second son of Frederick Trench and his wife Elizabeth Eyre, daughter of John Eyre. Trench represented Banagher in the Irish House of Commons from 1735 to 1671. Subsequently, he sat for County Galway, the same constituency his father had represented before, until his death in 1768. He served as colonel of Militia Dragoons of County Galway. On 13 March 1732, Trench married Frances Power, only daughter of David Power. They had five daughters and six sons. Trench was buried at Ballinasloe. His third and eldest surviving son William was raised to the Peerage of Ireland. In 1757 he applied for and received letters patent for the right to hold annual fairs in Ballinasloe on 17 May and 13 July.
